My Chances at Tech

What is that link, banjo? An on-line conditional acceptance for a generic transfer student???

No. It’s an admission decision (Conditional Admission) only available to legacies. Here’s how Admissions describes it on their blog:

[Georgia Tech :: Office of Undergraduate Admissions :: Knowing Changes Everything Blog: We love you!](http://gatechadmissions.blogspot.com/2008/03/we-love-you.html)

Right-- its a chat (tongue in cheek, it appears, with the comment):

about possible transfer opportunities, and its from a few years ago. It is amusing, and I thank you for posting it. But I do not believe legacy applies to freshmen applicants of public institutions. Take a peek at the article I linked above.

There are several guaranteed transfer opportunities, such as this one [Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG)](http://www.gpc.edu/tag/)

Transfer opportunities is a different animal that freshman admissions.

So you deny that Conditional Admission exists for legacies and only legacies?

Yes, thats correct. Guaranteed admission is available (after 2 years), for example, to students from Ga Perimeter college if they also maintain a certain GPA and meet whatever the requirements are that are set forth by the school. I would guess (don’t know for sure) that the criteria for academic acceptance is the same. Do you have a link as to what the academic standards are that are required? Probably a 3.0 GPA, I would guess. (*** Nope-- see below-- they only need a 2.7)

*** Actually, the GA perimeter (and other 2 year state of ga school) thing provides guaranteed admission to ANY of the State of GA schools and many private GA schools after 2 years with base academic requirements. Quite a sweet deal, actually.

Heres’ a little bit of the explanation of the TAG program, from Ga State’s website:
http://www.gsu.edu/admissions/28681.html</a></p>

*** Check this out-- the student at Ga Perimeter College (a 2 year school that itself has an almost guaranteed admissoins policy for students) only needs to maintain a 2.7 GPA at GPC to get guaranteed admission to Tech!! Ga State, UGA, West GA, Oglethorpe and Agnes Scott require a 2.8 GPA for guaranteed transfer admissions. Wow! http://www.gpc.edu/tag/schoolstochoosefrom.html</a></p>

You didn’t answer the question. Forget 2 year transfer though RETP, or GPC, or HBCU, or anything else.

Is Conditional Admission - that is 1 year guaranteed transfer based on GPA - available to anyone other than legacies?

For reference, I’ll send you to admission.gatech.edu/legacy

I did answer your question in post #25-- this procedure is no different than a conditional acceptance. In fact- its a guaranteed acceptance, through the back door. Seems sorta like the Emory Oxford plan

Yes, it’s very different. One is a 1 year transfer, one is a 2 or 3 year transfer. One is available only to legacies, one is available to everyone. Clearly, legacies are treated differently.

There is no such thing as a 3 year transfer from GPC. It is a 2 year school

No, but there are 3 year guaranteed transfers from other schools (Spelman comes to mind).

A 1 year legacy conditional acceptance is materially and fundamentally different than a 2 year GPC transfer or 3 year Spelman transfer. Failing to admit that just makes you look foolish.

I am not familiar with transfer from Spelman, But yikes, how many years would it take to graduate from Tech after 3 yrs at Spelman. That seems painfully long and probably painfully expensive.

The TAG program only guarantees you will get in the school, it doesnt guarantee acceptance in a specific program or not(atleast at gpc). REPT on the other hand guarantees admission to tech and into any engineering program. The minimum gpa for RETP is 2.7 overall and 2.7 for math/science for instate students. So RETP is a better deal than TAG in my opinion, unless your in a non-engineering major. In that case, TAG would be your only choice. Even if your not going through a program, with high gpa you can get into almost any major at tech. I decided to apply without any program because i dont want to waste my hope hours taking 3-4 classes that will not transfer.

The Spelman transfer program takes 5 years: 3 at Spelman, 2 at Tech. There are many other colleges with 3/2 programs at GT and many, many other colleges with 3/2 programs at other engineering schools. Usually, but not always, you’re awarded two BS degrees (in a math or science from the non-engineering school and in engineering from the engineering school).

Many Tech students take 5 years to graduate, with their co-ops and all, even if they started Tech as a freshman.

BTW, banjo, in case you might be misunderstanding, as I realize I was unclear, the last statement in post #19 was not in response to anything you said, it was in response to the comments made by coolcats. I think you and I are for the most part in agreement.

Hmmm… this is confusing… The Link to that blog was from March, 2008. So I take that to mean that was re: acceptances/denials for the class starting fall 2008. So why does that conditional acceptance letter you posted, banjo, reference conditional acceptance starting fall 2011??

The blog is regarding their classes of admission. There was a Conditional Acceptance for legacies in 2008, and a Conditional Acceptance for legacies in 2011.

Do you know how to find the # of transfers who applied vs were accepted in any academic year?

Ah, here it is, from the 2009-10 Common Data Set:
D2 Applicants Admitted
Applicants
Enrolled
Applicants
D2 Men 1,250 479 415
D2 Women 491 138 109
D2 Total 1,741 617 524

38% of men were accepted as transfers, only 28% of women.
