My chances at these schools

I'm a Junior in rural Texas looking at colleges and wanted to know my chances a few of these schools:

University of Chicago
Oberlin
Marlboro
St Johns (Santa Fe)
Bard
Grinnell
Occidental
Pomona

My academic high school GPA is around a 3.2 and my overall high school GPA is around a 3.6. However I go to a private High School that is very hard and has a great reputation. I've taken 2 AP's so far and will be taking 5 AP's my senior year. I scored a little under a 1400 on my SATs and will probably take some SAT II's. For my EC's I have dozens of hours in community service and am a talented/active musician (thought I am not applying to the conservatories of any of the schools above). Just wanted to know your opinions on my chance at getting into any of them. Thanks

best chance is at occidental

really, you dont think any of the others?

Pay little attention to those who don't have a clue. Chicago and Pomona are the unliklieson this list, the others, with 1400 old, are in reach if your school is as hard as you say (you're in top 10%) and your recs and app are good.

I'm actually not in the 10%, people at my school in the top 10% have 4.2 or higher. I'm right outside of the top 30%

reaches: University of Chicago, pomona
low reaches: Oberlin, grinnell
matches: bard, occidental
safeties: Marlboro, St Johns (Santa Fe)

most selective lac's put much more weight on gpa and class rank than test scores. being outside of the top 30% can really hurt your chance, i'd suggest you put more effort your senior year and try to make top 20%.

I would classify Oxy as a reach. They are getting tons of applications there.

oxy as a reach? acceptance rate of 40+% and avg. sat ~ 1295.

i think collegeprep has it about right

For Oxy, it's about $$$$. I've seen 1400's plus get rejected when applying for financial aid and 1100s accepted if they could pay. Your class rank is your issue.

i'm not sure if the whole money issue is true about oxy, but i wouldn't be surprise. oxy is not a wealthy school and it cannot afford to pay so generously for the students. another reason could be that the kid who got 1400+ didn't show enough interest in the school and many schools do take this very seriously. this happens quite often at schools like wustl and tufts where overqualified students are turned down.

What about my chances Carleton and Macalester (Minnesota)

carleton is as competitive as uchicago, macalester is as competitive as oberlin.

i applied to macalester this year with a 2110 SAT, 3.94 UW, 4.41 W, a load of EC's (some of which I was president of), good essays, rank of 7/340, and got waitlisted. i have to admit that that's the one school i thought i'd get into that i didn't.

cats1127, impressive stats for macalester but maybe you didn't show them enough interest. this happens often to overqualified applicants at tufts and wustl. where are you now?

tufts was my first choice, but i got waitlisted there too, lol. i'm going to barnard in the fall.

Macalester doesn't consider demonstrated interest when looking at applications. The admissions department figures that some students can afford counselors who'll tell them how to play the game of showing interest, so considering that puts low income applicants at a disadvantage.
I've heard from a few sources that Tufts really does care about demonstrated interest. I think there's a thread on here somewhere talking about that.

definitely tufts and wustl, mainly because these two are most often used a safties for those applying to hypms.
