My chances at these schools

Hi. I was wondering if you guys could tell me my chances at these schools:
JHU
Duke
Georgetown
Emory
UMD-College Park
Cornell
Brown
Howard
Virginia Commonwealth

Welcome to College Confidential. I see you're new here. We can't help you if we don't see your stats. Look at some of the other "What are my chances" posts to give you an idea how to lay out your stats. Right now, all we see is a list of schools. For all we know, you could have a 1.8 GPA, 1140 SAT's, and dog-walking as an extracurricular. We need more information to go by to assess your chances.

Here are my stats:
Freshman gpa- 4.0(uw)
Sophomore gpa-4.0(uw)/4.13(w)
Junior gpa(4.37 w)(dunno uw, but i just got 1 B in an AP course)
SAT-2040(590 CR, 700 M, 750 WR) will retake in the fall
SAT2- chem:640 phys:620(will retake and study harder for these)
AP Bio-4, AP Chem-4, AP Phys B-3 AP CALC BC-2(will not report this)
EC'S: 12 years as a member of the Washington DC Youth Orchestra Program learning violin and currently 2nd chair of the orchestra, All county orchestra and All state orchestra, solo and ensemble festivals(superior rating), 4 years of private violin lessons, 11 years of piano lessons, a few prizes at local piano competitions, numerous keyboard and theory exams passed and will be receiving trophies for them, It's Academic, NHS, French Honor Society treasurer, Intenational Club, Medical ethics club, ZETA Electric String ensemble, Toastmaster's Youth International Youth Leadership Program. I have done some volunteer work at a local hospital for a couple months now(3 hrs per week), at my school's summer precalculus program where I tutored students with precal(60 hrs over 6 weeks), and 30 hours for 1 week at a space camp at NASA.

Also, I am part of a chamber orchestra within the DC Youth program and have been for 4 yrs. We have performed at many venues including galas for the orchestra program, local press conferences, and even events at which President Bush, his wife, and the Redskins sports team have been in attendance.

Next year, I will be involved with a research internship in physical science at the University of Maryland, College park. Would this help any? Also, please tell me of any other schools I would have a good chance of getting into. I want to major in either biology or chemistry. Thanks!

I was also 1st chair a couple of times in my school orchestra and the DC Youth's lower orchestras. At the NASA camp, I served as a Mission Team Leader. This is my leadership.

I am in the top 5% of my class. Next year, I will be taking Calculus 3 and Differential Equations and will receive credits from the Catholic University of America.

Are you an URM? I see that you're considering Howard University, a historically black college, so I'm under the assumption you're black. That can help you a lot when it comes to colleges.

I think you have great chances everywhere. The only thing I see that will hurt you are your low SAT/SAT II scores. However, if you are really are black, those factors can be pardoned. Your CR score is really low though;I would try to raise it significantly.

With your stats, why would you be interested in Virginia Commonwealth? Just curious.

Hello. Well, I'm not black. I'm Asian. And I was considering Virginia Commonwealth and Howard for their BS/MD programs, which I know I have a really low chance at.

Bump please

Bummmpppppppppppppppppp

JHU - Reach
Duke - Reach
Georgetown - Reach
Emory - Reach
UMDCP - Match
Cornell - Reach
Brown - Reach
Howard - Match (BS/MD)
Virginia Commonwealth - Match (BS/MD)

theoneo, can you please explain your post?

I think the oneo is going on your scores. It would be quite hard to be accepted at most of these schools given your current SATs. What's hard for us to know is if your violin talent is unusual enough for you to be an exception.

Original post-LOL

Howard sounds like a possibility.

Your 590 is going to hurt you a lot.

You seem to be in a bunch of clubs with no common underlying passion or interest. Your school doesn't like rigorous at all, especially since it's in DC. The music stuff is good, but not enough to compensate for your scores and other activities.

Don't get the wrong impression when I say match - it means that I think you have a good shot at getting in. However, I wouldn't call any of them safeties just because you aren't a shoo-in for any of them - or at least for the programs you're applying for. BS/MD programs are always really competitive.

Wait, my school is in Prince George's county in MD. It's not in DC. Also, what scores would you reccomend for me to have a great shot at most of these schools? By the way, I am getting a tutor for the critical reading part of the sat, so hopefully, that should improve a lot. I didn't study much for the sat2's I took in the past, and was not really familiar with their format. But I've studied extensively over the summer for the Barrons' books, and I think my scores will be in the 700's.

About the clubs, what can I do to improve? I have heard at college workshops that it's better to have fewer EC's and be good at them, rather than to have a whole list of clubs and not really have a strong position in them. I've held few strong positions. I was first chair in the ZETA ensemble, tressurer of French Honor Society, and will most probably appear on tv for the It's Academic tv show, with my school's team.
