My chances at Tufts

What are my chances for getting into Tufts?

First of all, it's hard to gage this for me, because my school is so damn competitive and third decile kids commonly end up going to schools like Northwestern and excellent second-tier schools...so I really need your guys' help...

My weighted GPA: 4.5 (this is tough to explain, I have a 3.5 unweighted in a mix of AP and honors classes."

SAT (on 1600, i'm taking new one soon): 1360
ACT: 31

4 years of math: ended finishing AP Calculus AB
5 years of Social studies: US Hist, World Hist, Modern World Hist, AP Economics, and AP Political Science
5 years of German: ended with AP
4 years of english
3 years of science: Bio, Physics, Chemistry

Also did four years of gym, cuisine, music theory, and debate for two semesters each.

EC:
*President of my class for four years (out of a class of 1100...my school has produced donald rumsfeld, ann margaret, charleton heston, fallout boy, etc. it's a very eye-popping thing to see if you're a college).
*Founder and president of the Ben and Jerry's Club
*Treasurer of German Club for one year
*Baseball freshman year
*Member of my schools strategic planning committee, which only included a handful of students
*Intramural volleyball for four years
*Social service, three hours a week, for two years
*held two jobs throughout my high school career, both of about 12 hours a week, obviously at different times
*Helped baseball coach run a sports camp and birthday parties for kids.
*one year of Safe Rides (helpiung drunk kids get home safe)
*A radio show for two years

Ok, so those are the meat and bones, but there is more. I went to Germany on a school trip for three weeks. This was a great experience, especially resume wise, because my German teacher will write my recommendation. She has known me for four years and thinks very highly of me. I went to NSLC, some student leadership program in DC for politics one session. Adding on to my political career, I am on a student leadership advisory board with my congressman. I may be able to even get a reccomendation from him (a congressman!). With him, I helped "adopt" three afghani girls and buy their school a $4,000 library as well as fly them over here and do other wonderful things for them. I also am actively involed with the local chapter of the Libertarian Party. With all this, it obviously shows I am pretty passionate about politics, with all these activities, as well as my FOUR years of being president. I hope this emphasis will show I can really contribute.

I know my grades are hard to explain so it might be hard for you guys to gage, but what do you think right now, are my chances of getting into Tufts?

Your SATS are a little light for Tufts, so I'd have to say that at this point it's a reach. Get the SAT M+V into the 1420 to 1440, and it becomes a match.

"donald rumsfeld, ann margaret, charleton heston,... fallout boy"

haha, that made me laugh for some reason. i messed with the spacing for dramatic purposes if you want to be picky about it.

hahaha yes I know, I think I just put that because those are the thing wikipedia lists for famous alumni at my school...but, hey, let's get down to business, can you answer my original question...

second poster is right about the SAT's, try to bump those up a bit. EC's are looking pretty solid. You can you're concerned about your gpa, but where does that 3.5 put you in your class of 1100? It's hard to say without rank, because each school is different.

I'll probably be somewhere in the third decile (20%-30%). But this semester I am rocking majorly. With all the AP's I'm taking next year, my rank will go up even more, and I'll show that I'm ending on an up slope (what colleges like, I hear.) Do you think my EC's are good enough that if I continue to post very strong grades and improve my SAT, I'm looking good?

By this, do you mean...good to go? Like, good chance?

average tufts rank in class accepted it usually in the top6%, so dunno if third decile will cut it. i really want to attend tufts too, your thread caught my eye :]

but in all actuality, i just talked with my guidance counselor (who went to tufts himself) because i was worried my own GPA was too low to get into tufts (3.8W, but i'm at the bottom of the top decile; at our school it is extremely difficult to get A's) but he says tufts is a big AP school: meaning if you take a lot of APs and do well grade/exam-wise, it will boost you tremendously even if your gpa isn't the "highest"... esp with an otherwise rigorous courseload (all honor classes from frosh)

match = you have a good chance, yes

however, your ECs are aaaamazing (mine don't come close hehe, how do you DO it all?) but i did well on the new SATs (2200) so if you stuuudystudystudy hard and raise those SATs, i'd say you have an excellent chance despite the unweighted GPA =P

Yeah, I'm going to work EXTREMELY hard to get my SAT and ACT scores up now. About my EC's though...I dunno. I really feel like I don't deserve the resume I have because there are kids who probably do so much more work and have less to show for it. However, anyways, I'm gonna get my grades up as much as possible. Good luck to you too!
