My chances at UCLA

Hi, i'm currently a junior in high school and i really want to go to ucla. these are my stats

overall gpa: 3.5 unweighted (i was really lazy freshman year)
uc gpa: 3.7 unweighted
sat: 1900
sat subjects: havent taken them yet
AP test: im gonna be taking 4 this year (in may)

EC: i play football and run track and im probably gonna play basketball next year. I have over a 100 hours of community service and im a black belt in taekwondo.

So, what are my chances at getting in to UCLA? If theres anything that i need to do to improve please let me know!

hm … what would your uc gpa weighted be?
I’d say that if you raise your SAT score a little you’d be about average …
what’s your ethnicity?

im asian (cambodian), low middle class, and i live in California.

im not sure about my weighted gpa

Grades (AP classes) and standardized test scores are the MOST IMPORTANT factors to the UCs or any public school. ECs, community service, and your personal essays will also be important, but are not the prime criteria (I would consider them to be boosting/determining factors).

If anything, focus on your grades and test scores. Take as many AP/Honors classes as you can manage with good grades, and trying breaking 2000 on the SAT, or 30 on the ACT. You are in the running, but not solid-you can do it! :)

not unless you go to community college first.

You’re very unlikely to be admitted into UCLA as a freshman but its worth a random shot. ;)

not being pessimistic, just realistic. the chances are rather low- but hey! doesn’t hurt to apply. bump up that SAT and work on your GPA and you might just have a shot!

Find something and stick with it for a while if u haven’t. And Leadership will help u a lot. so try and get something that isn’t ur average volunteer at a hospital, library, or tutor. It’ll make u stand out as an applicant.

what if i raised my sat score to about a 2000 and passed all 4 of the ap test that im taking this may? and does it help that my sister attends UCLA? she graduated there with a ba in history and now shes going back there for grad school.

whats up bro, IM CAMBODIAN TOO!
I just got accepted to ucla two days ago!

First of all, they dont count your freshman year, so disregard it. Its easy to calculate your gpa. Just add up the points:
4-A
3-B
etc…
and divide by the number of classes.
Give yourself 5 points for every A in an honors/AP class. you can use up to 8 semesters of these extra points.

If it comes out > 4.1, then you have a pretty good shot at ucla.
Also, your SAT score isnt too shabby. I know plenty of people who got into ucla with that score. But raise it up to a 2000 and that would be better.

your sister attending wont help you, sorry.

good luck khmer homie!

You still wouldn’t make it. Your GPA is faaaaaaaaaar too low. You definitely need 2100+ on the SAT and even then you’re not competitive with your grades. Passing 4 APs isn’t going to impress admissions either. You need to have only 4s and 5s. That’s what an average UCLA student does. Your AP scores won’t look particularly good unless you get at least three 5s out of four.

It’ll be quite a stretch if you get admitted into UCLA.

thanks guitarfrk! ok, so i calculated my UC weighted gpa and it came out to be a 4.05. Do i count B’s in AP classes as 4.0’s? and how bout IB classes, because my school has a mixture of IB/AP classes. Are IB classes weighed on the 5.0 scale?

yeah, add 5 for an A in IB courses. Remember you can only use 8 semesters!

4.05 weighted is looking pretty good. If you can push it up to 4.1 or 4.2 this semester, that would be great!

remember if you have extenuating circumstances, write that in your personal statement. ucla’s holistic admissions can give you a little edge in that respect.
