Hi I'm going to be a senior this year. My sister went to UM and will be a junior this year. UM is my first choice, but I dont think my SAT's are high enough. However, I am taking the October SAT, so I will have a chance to heighten them.

SAT's:
CR: 530
Writing: 570
Math: 690

My verbal rly sux, but I want major in aerospace engineering. Will they not take the verbal part so seriously? I want to get my Math to at least 700.

Im unsure about my GPA as Im doing the IB diploma. I have two 6's, two, 5's, a 4 and a 4+. Thats just over 5, on average.

If anyone can tell me what my chances are I'd greatly appreciate it!! Thanks!

im not sure but im applying also - my sats were 740W 740CR and 690M...so, unfortunately, ive heard that since most people do pretty well on the math section, the CR score is actually evaluated the MOST --- but thats just what ive heard anyone else have any other opinions?

+plus, did you take the act? I only took it once and found it a little easier...but actually my ACT score translates exactly to my SAT score (2170 --> 32)...so try the ACT, maybe youll rock the Reading or English and you can just send that in.

Are you an international? Is English your first language? Your poor verbal score could be forgiven if English is not your first language and you are applying for engineering (as opposed to a more language-oriented major).

Try to improve your SAT M to over 700 and your SAT verbal to over 600. Michigan will understand a lower score on the verbal because English is not your native language. Michigan also likes European applicants because not many students apply from Europe. There are currently fewer than 100 undergraduate students from EU countries, which is not that much when you consider that the UAE alone has over 40!

Well I am german (I was born there) however, I do go to an english school and my english > my german. Once again though, I grew up with both languages which made it hard for me to focus completely on english. They might accept that :S What book do you recommend I study to improve my verbal sections? I have the barron 2400 book, it had some good stuff in it, I'm hoping my October SAT results will look better.

I wanted to take the ACT, imo its way better than the SAT for me, the english is easier and the math better suited for me, however, they dont offer the writing test part of the ACT outside US, which REALLY sux. Question though: Can you take the ACT and the writing test seperately?

M4gic4an, I am not going to lie to you and tell you that your chances are good. Michigan usually looks for a healthy mix of 7s and 6s on the IBs. Typically, IB students get a total of 39 or so on their combined IBs.

Michigan will overlook a 5 or even a 4 in English in the case of international students, but Engineering students will be expected to get 7s or a 6 and a 7 in Mathematics and Physics.

Your SAT math is acceptable, but your overall SAT score is 150 points below the Michigan mean.

That is not to say that you don't have a chance, but Michigan is a reach for you. Definitely work hard on improving your SAT score. Try to break the 700 on the math and the 600 on the verbal. I don't think Michigan looks at the writing section yet.

Having your sister at the University will be a plus, as will your being German. Believe it or not, there are just 10 or so undergrads from Germany at the University. So don't give up hope, work on your SAT and apply by mid October (International students need no apply as early as US citizens).

As an int'l applicant I don't see much hope, but apply anyway-theres always a chance.

Thx alexandre.

Does anyone know where I can find a copy of the "International Student Supplement" that is on the Common Application? I heard that it shows how IB grades are converted to US GPA's.

Also, concerning weigthed GPA's, can some1 give me a list of which schools accept weighted GPA's or consider them? B/c a weighted GPA would definetely help an IB student. I heard UM doesnt accept them. What about Purdue?

Thanks for ur help. :)

I don't know about Purdue, but I think most colleges re-calculate GPA and then rank your schedule based on difficulty.
