My chances at USF..?

Im currently a In- State high school junior going into my senior year with a 3.8 weighted GPA..3.4 unweighted and a 3.5 academic GPA..i am involved in a lot of clubs..250+ service hours..I have taken about 5 honors courses and will be taking about 5 more my senior year. I have taken the ACT twice..i got a 17 on my first try and a 19 on the second time..I think a 19 could possibly ruin my chances of getting in..what do you guys think? I will be applying for summer term since its easier to get in

USF superscores the subsections of ACT. Too, consider taking SAT. Take the tests as many times as you can–try to work toward at least a 22 superscored ACT total score. Make sure you meet USF’s minimum requirement for each portion of ACT test or you have next to no chance of admission, meeting these minimums does not assure admission either–you want to do better:

SAT - Critical Reading >= 460 or ACT - Reading >=18
SAT - Math >= 460 or ACT - Math >= 19
SAT - Writing >= 440 or ACT - English/Writing >= 18

The following matrix shows what you probably need for admission:

http://usfweb2.usf.edu/Admissions/pdf/counselor-grid.pdf

Andreina, USF just released the new 2011-2012 admission matrix that indicates a 19 ACT will get a denial for admission. You need to get your test score up if you are going to submit an application for admission.

http://usfweb2.usf.edu/Admissions/pdf/counselor-grid.pdf

Also, USF adjusted minimum subscores:

SAT - Critical Reading >= 460 or ACT - Reading >=19
SAT - Math >= 460 or ACT - Math >= 19
SAT - Writing >= 440 or ACT - English/Writing >= 18

Wow that really sucks…ill be taking the ACT again on September with the hopes of getting AT LEAST a 20 or better…one question though…i have a good GPA…3.5 academic core and 3.8 weighted gpa…im taking a lot of honor courses this year- my senior year…and i took 4 more my junior yr…plus two more my freshman and sophmore year…which im sure will pump up my GPA even higher…do you think i will automatically 100% for sure will get a denial for admission from USF if i end up submitting my 19 on the ACT even though i have a great GPA with a lot of extracurriculars, rec letters and 250+ service hours?! cuz what that basically tells me is that they are basing admissions based on standerdized test scores cuz i have other good academic factors im just not a good test taker…wat do u think? By the way thanks for the matrix…highly appreciate it :)

First off, I’m just a student at USF, not an admission officer, so what I say doesn’t count for much. What I would first do if I were you is hold off on sending app to USF until I first saw my high school guidance counselor, with a copy of the above matrix, and ask her/his advice. As the matrix indicates, a 19 ACT will get you a flat out denial. Note however that the above matrix indicates it will be in effect Oct. 1, 2010, maybe before Oct. 1 (USF does rolling admissions) even older USF guidelines will be used that with a 19 ACT you would maybe be allowed in or at least deferred to see if you get better test scores–ask your guidance counselor to check with USF about that too. USF will look primarily at 3 things for admission: studies rigor, test scores, GPA. USF really doesn’t care too much about EC’s, unless you are some kind of super athlete or world piano champion or something else that makes you really stand out. I’ve heard about USF admissions officers telling students with tons of EC’s that appealed admission denials that they should have done less EC’s and studied more–telling USF that you did tons of EC’s won’t fly. Remember, about 25,000 students apply for freshman slots at USF–over half will be denied admission. It may not seem fair, but that’s the way it is. Again, good luck.

BTW, USF superscores ACT sub-sections–if you take the ACT multiple times add up best subscores for composite score. FSU superscores ACT too, UCF and UF don’t.

Thanks for the advice Lizard :)

Is that UW gpa on the matrix?

Weighted GPA is used in the matrix.

“Please note that USF recalculates an academic grade point average for admission purposes, adding weights of one point for AP, AICE, IB and dual enrollment courses and .5 for Honors in which a grade of ‘C’ or better is earned.”

Would I still be able to apply if I have a 410 in writing? All my other scores are ok,but I honestly didn’t try on the writing and am planning to take the SAT again

Thanks Lizard!!

You can apply, but going by the matrix, USF will not offer you regular admission with a writing score less than 440. You should maybe do just like I suggested to andreina above and talk to your guidance counselor before you submit your application to USF–take a copy of the matrix thing with you to the counselor. Take the ACT test too with the writing portion. Good luck!

BTW, If USF-Tampa refers you over to USF-St. Pete, remember USF-St. Pete is an independently accredited college that is only a part of the USF system kinda like an independently franchised location/college. Campus housing at USF-St. Pete is very limited without too many dorm rooms on the campus. http://www.tampabay.com/features/humaninterest/usf-st-petersburg-freshmen-living-in-luxury-at-the-hilton/1119189
