I know my SAT scores are lacking, but I am a terrible test taker, do you think that my GPA will make up for my SATs?

brittneyhu…OOS at UVa is very competitive. There were students last year on CC who posted they were waitlisted with 2300+ SATs and near-perfect GPAs. I’ll be upfront, I do think your SAT will hurt you. Are you a URM by chance? If so, you might have a shot. Also, if your AP scores are high, then perhaps that might offset your SATs and put your GPA in context. At any rate, you should apply – nothing ventured, nothing gained. Good luck!

Jc40, Thank you for replying! I’m asian so I’m not a URM =( Does it help or hurt me that I’m an out-of-stater? And Do you know if i apply to a specific school within UVA (for example, the college of arts and sciences) if I can transfer out at my own leisure if I do, miraculously get accepted that is. Also, will applying as a certain major help my chances of being accepted?

OOS competition is quite a bit more intense than IS. You should browse through the old threads on the UVa forum and see for yourself. MOST non-URM, OOS students that are accepted have at least a 3.8 GPA and 2120+ SAT. This is merely my observation based upon the posts. The data set doesn’t divide OOS students’ stats from IS like UNC does, but it’s a well-known fact it’s more difficult/competitive for OOS students. Last year’s acceptance rate for OOS was around 22% (the same as say Northwestern, for example).

UVa is NOT like say Vanderbilt, UT, or Duke, for example, where you can somewhat improve your odds of admission by applying to certain colleges/majors. The E-school kids at UVa have a more or less “set” curriculum; there’s little room to venture outside the scope. One of the BIG advantages of UVa over other top schools, though, is that they don’t put a cap on AP transfer credit. Presuming you make a 5 (even a 4 on some tests), you’ll get credit. D walked in with 51 credit hours! This allows the student flexibility to take more classes of interest and can save considerable money.

If the school truly interests you, you should apply. The odds aren’t in your favor, but you NEVER know…it could happen!
