I have yet to take the SAT...my GPA is 3.9 and class rank is #11 out of 1161 students, graduated with high honors. I'm also a member of the National Honor Roll. I have been a professional tennis player for 4 years, travelling the world and competing in Grand Slams and various professional tennis tournaments. I thought this may help me get in, and be a unique essay topic. What do you think my chances are? What SAT scores would I need to aim for? Thanks!!

If you're IS, I would say all you need is a mid 1200 SAT and keep up the rank/GPA....however, does your graduating class really have 1161 students?? Or is that out of your entire school?
Try contacting UVa's tennis coach, see what you can do about being recruited. As a D-I school, coach's do have some power in admissions I would assume

I'm not familiar with NCAA rules, but something about professional players going back to play in college doesn't sound right (not that I care...UVa could always use another ringer ;-). Now this is not a problem if you don't intend on playing tennis, but if you intend on being on the tennis team I think you need to do some research.

I'm not able to play tennis because I'm a professional...but I'm interested in helping out with the team in any way I can. Maybe that would help me get in.

i am wondering how you are 11th with a GPA of 3.9. at my school, the last person to get in ED was 19th (out of 300) and has a 4.92. All GPA's and ranks lower than him got deferred or rejected.

Maybe his GPA's unweighted. I don't think it's fair to compare weighted GPA as schools do it differently. One school I heard gave an extra 0.5 to honors and a 1.0 to AP/IB. On the other hand, my school gives out an extra 0.5 to certain IB courses, but that's it. Different schools can be harder/easier or have grade inflation/deflation. It's just too simplistic to compare GPA without knowing the circumstances.

That's why UVA takes class rank into so much consideration. They know all schools have different GPA scales for AP/IB/Honors.

Exactly. My school doesn't rank though. Is that a disadvantage?

It won't be a disadvantage at all. A majority, if not all, of Fairfax County schools don't rank, and they have the highest number of students entering.

BTW, National Honor Roll is a National Scam. Its nothing. Everyone gets that. So dont put that on your resume or application. They will laugh at you. Now if you were National Merit Scholar, thats another thing of course. Haha.. but ye, ur GPA and rank are great. Its not all about the numbers though. Remember, essays are critical. So are extracurricular involvement that show passion. Keep all this in mind.
