My Chances At VT

Hello and thank you for taking the time to help me. I am about to go into my senior year of high school. I really want to go to Virginia Tech. to major in Mechanical Engineering but I know wanting it isn't enough so I was hoping somebody could determine my chances or at least guess.

SAT
550-Reading
620-Math
470-Writing

ACT
23

I know these scores are not very impressive but consider that they were the first time I took them and without much practice. As for GPA I have held a low 80's avg freshman, sophomore and junior year, so around 3.0 give or take a couple 1/10's.

Freshman Year

Geometry Honors
English 1 Honors
World History Honors Part 1
Art

Sophomore Year

English 2
World History Honors Part 2
Introduction to Computer Programming

Junior Year
Physics Honors

Honors Advanced Pre-Calc
AP US History
English 3
Philosophy
Theodicy

Upcoming Senior Year
AP Physics
AP Econ
Honors Calculus
Honors English 4

As for Extracurricular activities the list is pretty long. This is including next year, 4 years of football 2 of which varsity, 3 years of varsity wrestling, 4 years of lacrosse 1 of which varsity. 2 years of 4H, 4 years of Computer repair club, 2 years of Model UN, 4 years of Key Club, and some other clubs that I wont bore you with.

If there is any other information that you think would be helpful in estimating my chances please let me know I will happily post them. Thanks again.

I think that if you can get those test scores up, you’ll have a legitimate shot. Several people from my school got in with similar grades/ECs and only slightly better test scores.

Bump that ACT up to a 28+, then a good shot. :)

Ok thanks for the replies. Lets say I do get in, what is the probability of get financial aide?

That depends, where do you live?

I currently live in New York. I was born in Virginia and lived there for a couple of years before moving.

Then I would probably say that you won’t get much aid, as you don’t live in VA. It is usually very hard for out of state students to get aid from public colleges if they don’t have stellar stats.

That is what I have heard but wasn’t sure. Well with VT settled what do you guys believe are my chances are at getting into UVA?

I highly doubt you will get into UVA. HIGHLY doubt.

^^^^^

Please read the OP, it’s about VT, not UVA.

^^^^^ Please read the entire thread SPECIFICALLY the post right above mine.

Ahhhh, my bad :)

But yeah, I think UVA would be a high reach.

Ok UVA is a far reach with my current scores. How much do they need to improve to give myself a better chance

Your SAT should be at least 2000+ and your ACT should be 28+. And your GPA must be significantly higher. Like 95/100 or around a 3.8 to have a decent chance

Thanks everybody for your replies on both VT and UVA but I have one more college that I would like your help with. Clemson. Any thoughts?
