My Chances? - average student

I am:
living in North Georgia (in the kind of richer parts), female, Indian.

Courses
In my freshman and sophomore year (this year) I have taken all honors classes. In this sophomore year, I've taken AP World History, the only AP class offered to sophomores.

Next year I plan to take honors classes with AP Bio and AP Language. In senior year, I predict to take AP Physics B, AP Calculus, AP Literature, AP Pyschology with Honors Spanish 5. I will do band both years.

GPA UW: 3.96 (A- in Chemistry ><)
GPA W: 4.668
Current Average w/ 7 honors points added to each class average: 103%
Average w/o 7 honors points: 97%
I dont think our school does class rank for sophomores.

PSAT: 1790, (590 W, 610 R, 590 M) Its bad, but I'm improving on practice tests, and now its around 1900.
I'm taking the World History SAT II this summer, and I expect to do very well on it.

Extra Curricular Activities
Debate (possibly co-captain next year)
Beta Club (next year)
Band (Musicals, Honor and All-District Band, Currently in Wind Ensemble, the highest band)
Work/Volunteer/Tutor @ Kumon (Counting from this January it is 105 hours, but counting from last fall, it would be around 210).

Summer Plans: Debate camp (2nd year), Volunteer at Kumon and local library

Accolades: Super Honor Roll, Principals List, Legion of Honor, Legion of Scholars, VIP for Geometry H (everything but the VIP is pretty much not that hard to get, VIP is where your teacher nominates you specifically for the award).

I know these aren't great statistics for getting acceptance to a fabulous well known school, having just realized this once reading this discussion board. But I want to improve and become a better student. I haven't looked at schools in details, but Emory, Duke and Princeton have appealed to me greatly (most in part because I've spent atleast 2 weeks at each campus). What are my chances of getting into these schools? If the chances are slim to none, what are some ideas on which I could improve on to better my chances?

I just would really love to get into a nice college to impress my family of geniuses and I'm willing to put as much work as I can into doing so :)

raise ur sat score 200+ points, join more ec's

Thanks afro_ninj4! I think I'm joining atleast 3-4 more clubs next year, because I will probably get my license next year, allowing me to drive myself back home :P

any more advice from others?

uhm...bump :)

sounds like you go to Northview High School

SweetM:
Honors classes are not weighted. You need more AP's for the top schools.
Also, no need to add 3-4 more EC's. Continue on the ones you have as they like continuity. Try to add 1 unique EC or community service instead.

Just FYI to put it in perspective for you:
Son- Unweighted GPA- 4.0
13 AP's
Great and numerous EC's
Valedictorian
ACT- 33
Did not get into the Ivy's he applied to. He is a white male from the Northeast giving him the least likely advantage. If we lived anywhere else he would likely have gotten in to all. You may do better in this regard. Be realistic, there are many great schools for you and it does not have to be an Ivy or Emory (although you should be accepted there) to succeed. You will visit a school you are accepted at and fall in love with it and feel it is a prefect fit for you regardless of where it falls in the USNews ranking. Continue to do well in school but don't set yourself up for disappointment. College rejections do not always have to do with a poor fit or unacceptable grades. remember, grad school counts more.

Also, stop trying to impress your family. You are very intelligent and motivated- that is impressive. Schools have become more selective and each have an enormous amount of applicants. Do not compare you parents/siblings/cousins to you. My sophomore son and you will be in the largest graduating class this country has seen and with it more competition for all college spots. Continue to do well and you will get the HOPE scholarship and can save lots of money for your doctorate at Harvard!!!

Good luck to you.

Thanks crazed! I really appreciate your thoughts :)

and yeah, I do go to Northview. HOW'D YOU GUESS?! :D

*improve sat score [try to get above at least a 2150]
*and when you decide to join clubs and ecs next year, choose the ones you are passionate about, colleges will know if you just chose it to put it beside your name
**do well on the ap exams

GOOD LUCK

SweetM-

You are doing great. Also, you took the PSAT as a sophomore and most don't take it until the beginning of Junior year. Sat in April, May, or June of Jr year so keep that in prospective.

Also, your grades are terrific. At this rate, I think Emory will be "safe" for you. Personally, I don't think Duke and the Ivy's are "safe" for anyone, but I think you have a great shot there. As a resident of Georgia, a female, and Indian decent, I think this will all work in your advantage for Duke, Princeton, any Ivy in fact. It certainly won't hurt you. The schools want diversity (which is a negative for the northeast white males, or so they say) but may work for you!!!! I wouldn't discount any schools at this point for you. Sounds like you will be a great a fit for all these schools and your stats are impressive.

Other popular schools are UVa, Wash U in St. Louis. Don't overlook some less "impressive" but great fit schools though which will also provide a great education for you and may have a different feel to the campus.

I think you are a great candidate for just about anywhere!
