My chances for admission at IMSA?

I'm applying to the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy in Aurora, Illinois, a public residential high school for 10 to 12th graders for residents of Illinois interested in math and science.

Current grade: 9
Race: Asian
SAT: Critical Reading 640, Math 720, Writing 720. Total 2080
Grades: All A's except one B+ in seventh grade
EC's related to math and science: Math team in 7th grade
Other EC's: Cello since 3rd grade, All-Conference Cross Country/Varsity letterwinner

IMSA admission is very much a numbers game, and they do not have a reputation for discriminating against Asian applicants the way some schools do. Two of my younger siblings graduated from there, and I believe they were admitted with similar stats (maybe slightly higher verbal scores and slightly lower math scores, I can't remember now.)

IMSA is an amazing place; both my siblings received excellent educations there. It can be a bit of a pressure cooker, but I think they were both happy with their choices to go there. And they got great internships at places like NASA and Fermi Lab while they were still in high school.

Schools, did you get invited?

Uh…is there any luck of me getting in?
My SAT scores were pretty low (550 Reading, 650 Math, 610 Writing)…but I’m not in ninth grade. I applied as an 8th grader, and I had several B’s in Geometry this year. Also, I’m Asian. Does IMSA have something against Asians? When I called IMSA, the man that answered the phone was pretty hostile to me.

nope, not hostile. read it, Math and Science. Anyways, 40% of them are asian (indian included). You’re prob not going to make it in as an eighth grader. maybe this year. Actually, I went to the tour this year and they said that last year (as in your year) the eight grader average was 730/Math and 660/reading. They had more kids this year max out the SAT then any of the other years. I’m in for a rough ride if I get in lol.

I don’t think any school is directly racist or discriminates against Asian applicants. They just get a lot more Asian applicants than you would expect according to demographics, and all that really does is take away the minority hook, since they aren’t a minority in most schools.

Do you think i will make it in to IMSA? My SAT scores weren’t that great… 750 Math and 630 Reading, also I am going to apply as an 8th grader… I really hope i get in!!! :)

If I can get into IMSA, so can you. You’ll be fine. I didn’t even attend though.

Were you admitted? In what grade? Also, what were your SAT scores for the grade that you were accepted in? Thanks in advance. :D

@3pic14‌ Did you get in? I am also an eighth grader applying this year, and it would help me a lot by referring to you.

@yka101 I did not. Sorry for the late response.
