Please help, I have no idea what my chances are.

I think i am in the same position as you are in. Of course, everybody says that colleges want a well-rounded person. However, I think that you get a higher chance at getting into the liberal arts or science based colleges. This could be true to an extent, but your EC's are wonderful, and anything is possible. I just wanted to say that you could make it. I heard that U Penn is one of the Ivy leagues that gives a greater chance to early decision appliers than other ivy's do. Take that into consideration! ^^ And, if you are really into u penn that much it will show in your apps. just be yourself. I also know that you could increase your SAt scores. See.....already more chances!

your ec's, courseload, and gpa look fine, and being from NM will help you more than you might think, but to be blunt, even for ED you're SAT score really should be brought up, ideally cracking at least 700 on both verbal and math, but your verbal score really needs to rise, and it'd be a good idea to get you're total to a level close to the school's average.
Also, what school are you applying to? i assumed the college when i wrote the above, but you're goals could be different if you're applying to SEAS or nursing (SEAS would give you points for being a girl, and you wouldn't need to improve your verbal score as much, but you'd be expected to have a high math score; Nursing would take you with a lower combined score)

thanks for your guys inputs! this summer i've taken a few practice tests and my math has raised to the 700's, however my english always seems to stay lower-that section seems to alway bite me (even in ACT) and no matter how i try, the score likes to stay low. i feel that it's like i dont even know how to take an english exam :(

one thing i really like about penn than other ive's is how well rounded their student body is and as you both said, that might help me get in ED i just don't really know though

...and i had thought about getting into Penn's bio/dental program since they have a great dental program-but yeah, the only problem is my SAT scores don't seem like a good fit for it partly cause thats one of their core requirements.
Applying to their nursing school is a good idea if you're interested in nursing and because of the needs of nurses, i hear that it's easier to get in through there. but im afraid that by transfering out from nursing school would be really tough and not worth it.

if anyone else has any more thoughts, it would be great to fill me in-thanks a bunch!

transferring to and from different schools at penn isn't all that hard in terms of the academic requirements; I think you're gpa has to be in the 3.3-3.5 range or higher, which can be hard for freshmen, but is certainly acheivable. Sometimes the challenge lies in making sure you're not too far behind in fulfilling the core requirements of the school into which you want to transfer, as scheduling can be come an issue. The problem with applying to nursing though is that Penn is well aware that people try to get into the other branches of the school by applying to less selective ones, so unless you have a demonstrable interest in nursing, it's probably not worth the risk. Your best bet is still to rais your verbal SAT as much as you can, and apply to either the college or SEAS. SEAS might be a viable option because it's considerably easier to get into than the college, but is still full of premed/dental/vet/etc. students. The downside is that the SEAS curriculum is BY FAR the most demanding at Penn, including both Wharton and the College pre-med track (I'm in the latter); the average first-year gpa in SEAS is something like a 2.5; but, as I said, it's easier to get into.

"Of course, everybody says that colleges want a well-rounded person."

not exactly that true. instead of wanting well-rounded students, colleges wants a well rounded student body nowadays. they are espacially fond of students with amazing abilities in one field, since there are so many well-rounded students nowadays....
i would say ur ec are good, not exactly impressive but shows consistency etc. .. ur SAT are definitely on the low side, did u take the old or new SAT??? wats with the 'new SAt converted to old'? if u took the new one, jsut post tht score, other than tht.. just write good essays n great recs and ull hav a chance

Thanks for the info guys-sorry i havent been able to post in a while since i've been out of town.

2.5 average at SEAS!!? wow-yeah i didnt think it would be THAT competitive if its a little easier to get into than the college-phillykid08, have you talked to or know anyone who's involved in the BioMedical Science program at SEAS?

yeah, Nerj, you're right. well rounded student body is what most colleges want nowadays. yeah-i did take the new SAT and got a total of 1700. the 1140 is the score when translated to the old one. well i just signed up for the new SAT so im hoping to improve my verbal by a ton of points (crossed fingers)

just out of curriosity phillykid08, what are you studying at Penn and what made you want to go there? (and if you want: what were your stats?)

PS-nerj...to quote someone, i think there should be a "quote" button to press next to a message instead of pressing reply. i need to check.

Wombat, you have a lot of things going for you. EC's look awesome, GPA is great.. basically very well-rounded in that sense. Another big push would be your location. I'd say, Penn will become more of a real possibility when you raise your CR score to around 650 or higher, although 700+ will definitely help. Apply ED if you're able to. Good luck!!

P.S.- I'm applying too, so hopefully we'll both be in the class of '10

ive used the Ten Real Sat book just to practice-it seems to be helping a bit (hopefully) what did you use to study? your score probably are not as low as mine
