Looking to Major in Finance or Political Science

Schools im looking at: I know, too many
Georgetown
UVA
Maryland
Berkeley
U Chicago
Northwestern
Rice
Hopkins
Cornell
Emory
Carnegie Mellon
UCLA
North Carolina
Michican

Umm you’re good at UNC, Mich, UCLA, Maryland with a rigorous course schedule and 1400 SATs. Not sure about the rest because you don’t have a ton of ECs, also poly sci is a pretty popular major so you’ll be competing with some tough candidates. With that said, The chinese thing is very impressive – schools are also looking for intellectual diversity if you know what I mean. Good luck!!!

You have kind of a long list and not much to go off of besides SAT and GPA. Why no SAT Writing section? Also, remember you will need 2 subject tests for most of those schools (3 for Georgetown). I’m anticipating people will say that your EC’s aren’t good but I have found is that they have to be either really good or nonexistent to have any more than a modest effect.

Georgetown - Reach
UVA - Reach (would be match but they seem to prefer in-state)
Maryland - Safety
Berkeley - Reach (they are more open to OOS now)
U Chicago - Reach
Northwestern - Reach
Rice - Reach
Hopkins - Reach
Cornell - Reach
Emory - Reach
Carnegie Mellon - Low Reach for Poli Sci, High Reach if Finance is at Tepper
UCLA - See Berkeley
North Carolina - Reach (Chapel Hill I’m assuming)
Michican - Match

Note when I say reach, I don’t mean I don’t think you’ll get in. In mean you have between a 1/5 and 1/3 chance. I wouldn’t say any of those are impossible, but I wouldn’t say they are likely. If you want to shrink the list I recommend removing schools that are geographically isolated from the others unless there is a specific reason to keep them (eg. Rice) just to make visiting easier and less of an expense.

For the EC’s I also run indoor track for 3 years and played lacrosse at one othe the top public lacrosse high schools in the state for 1 year. My HS Rank in the top 10% in a class of 300. I have Great reccemendations and spent a ton of time on the essay and got many people to revise/ help with the essay.

If you don’t mind me asking. What was your score on the writing portion of the SAT?

PS To go to Georgetown University you have to take 3 SAT II Subject tests, so technically your chances currently for Georgetown, UC Berkeley, and UCLA (maybe more) are at 0%

I got a 650 on the writing part. I also have taken the subject tests, and have gotten at least 700 on all of them.
