My Chances for UC Berkeley

I am very interested in UC Berkeley. I am planning on applying for Fall 2011. Here are my stats and all.

Out of State (Indiana)
GPA: 4.231 UW
Rank: 2 of 498
SAT: 600CR, 760M, 650W
Subject Tests: 760MII, 690Chem
AP: Calc BC 5, Chem 4, Stats 4, Lang/Comp 3, World 3, Psych 3, US 2
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: Asian (India)
Extracurriculars: student government, quiz bowl, academic superbowl (captain), french club, knitting club, improv club, volunteer work at united way and sheltering wings.
Awards: 2008 IUPUI Mathematics Contest 4th Place Winner

What do you think? I think my test scores are especially weak, so I will retake those in the upcoming weeks. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

sorry dude. out of state there is virtually no chance, i think about 10% of UCB freshman are OOS. and with that SAT score, there really isnt any point in applying.

Besides being captain of the superbowl team do you have any other leadership roles?

i am student body vice president and i am the president and founder of the improv club.

Yeah, I think UC Berkeley is a reach right now. Your GPA and ECs are strong but your SAT I, SAT IIs, and AP scores are relatively weak. Also, the fact that your Asian does not help your chances. If you were from CA, you’d have a decent chance, but the fact that you’re out of state makes it a lot harder to get in.

What SAT score is needed to have a good shot at Berkeley?

Yeah, i agree with you. I have been preparing a lot for testing in the next few months. I will retake sat reasoning and math level 2 and take physics. i am sure my scores will improve significantly. hopefully improving those will increase my chances.

If you’re out of state and Asian, probably something 2200 or higher.

http://students.berkeley.edu/admissions/freshmen.asp

this is the profile for the fall 2010 applicants. it looks like berkeley is taking more out of state applicants, probably for $$. out of state is 34.4% acceptance, while in state is 24.7%.

A 4.231 unweighted? If that is unweighted, on what scale? If it is a 4.231 out of 5, that would be very low for Berkeley. Perhaps you meant that is your weighted GPA? All of the UCs use the UC GPA. To get a better idea of how you stack up you should carefully figure your **UC GPA /B

As another poster mentioned, two SAT subject tests in two different areas are required for Fall 2011 admission (though that requirement is eliminated for subsequent years). You will not be considered without them.

And you are correct, the oos acceptance rates have consistantly been slightly higher than in-state, and even more so now that they have set a goal of increasing oos full-pay enrollment by 600 for Fall 2010. Just bear in mind that Berkeley will cost ~$50,000/year for oos.

And one more note: The UCs are barred by state law from considering race or ethnicity in admissions, so that will not effect your chances.

Good luck!

yes, that was my mistake, the gpa is 4.231 weighted. unweighted is around 3.97/4.00. even if i get my test scores up, the cost of berkeley might sway me away. quite a bummer. berkeley has been my dream school forever.

It’ll be somewhat of a reach, my friend.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I’ll try to improve my test scores in the upcoming months and hope for the best. But at this point, I would agree Berkeley is in fact a reach for me right now.

Berkeley is accepting way more OOS students now than in the past because they need the much higher tuition dollars they bring. They almost doubled the number this year and have to accept many because the yield OOS is half that of in state. The number will go up again this year, and as with many state schools, it may now be easier to get in from OOS.

If you up your SAT just a little, their average is 2050, and you have the $50k per year, good shot. They don’t see many from Indiana.

You do have a good chance. Your HS GPA is very high and Berkeley weighs HS GPA more than they do SATs. Take note that Berkeley does not superscore SATs.
