Sophemore year, I screwed around and ended the year with a 2.67 UC GPA

Then I got my act together, and so far in my junior year I have recieved 11 straight A's 5 of the classes are honors. 0 B's, 0 C's, 0 D's

So now my UC A-G GPA is a 3.77.

My SAT is a 1710

I have a bunch of hardships, and extra curriculars, and have a legit essay planned. Im a surfer. Hoping that they will notice my transformation from sophemore to Junior year.

I will be applying for Middle Eastern Studies because it is the least popular major.

I would really appreciate some opinions on my chances and how I might be able to improve my chances. Thanks a lot!

they might be skeptical of your seriousness of majoring in mes
id apply undeclared and get your SAT score up to try and balance out your gpa
you have a shot
be to sure to apply elsewhere though, at this point there isnt much left to do accept raise your sat I/II scores

Not to make you slack off or anything, but Sr. grades HARDLY matter.

If you actually calculated your UC GPA right, I suggest you match that GPA with AT LEAST a 1800 SAT. As of now, your chances of making it in are pretty tough, though possible.

If you can get a 1850, I see no reason why you would not make it.

you have to get 2000+ on ur sats. This year i had a 3.8 gpa with 1940 sats and got denied. Do something over the summer that would make you a desirable candidate.

yeah forsure, this summer I have an internship in a povert Roma Village in Hungary studying their lifestyle. So hopefully that might show them im a pretty well rounded guy. Idk, I also heard that this next year there is suppost to be like 10% less applicants due to this year being the peak of the baby boomers. What SAT II's arent too difficult?

haha, none of them, id say they are slightly above or at around ap level, then again, i took my tests all not when i was in that class (stupid me), i guess ush and m2

really its whatever your best subjects are, just know that m2 is 95% precalc with maybe 1 limit problem which is hardly calculus

just for reference, i got in witha 3.88 ucgpa and a 1900 sat

i got in with a 1820 and a 3.7. =D but i had some pretty tough stuff as well. i was taking 7 classes a year when every1 else was only taking 6. i showed commitment through 4 years of marching band. extracurricular activities included community service, band of course, 2 years of debate, 2 years of journalism.
so my advice is although you may not get the highest scores, you can get in by showing commitment and through your strength of schedule.

As I said in my reply PM, only put down Middle Eastern Studies if you are actually interested in it. Also, I am pretty sure that it isn't the least applied to major. I actually met quite a few people who were majoring in it when I went to Spring Insight. They just created a Middle East Resource Center, which I think boosted interest in MES at the school.

UC Santa Barbara is listed as Most Selective in admissions from US News & World whatever thingy, I don't really believe it. Yeah.

I got in with a 2.89 unweighted GPA, 3.01 UC weighted. SAT 1890. 21 hours community service. 2 years of JV Tennis, freshman and sophomore year. Junior and Senior year I worked at a local Chinese school where I tutor children in both regular schoolwork and Chinese work.

Started the Multi-Cultural club at my high school, president for one year vice president two years. Treasurer of AP Society club. For some reason, I'm pretty sure I'm an officer for another club, but sadly the rest of the officers don't care about it and now I can't even remember which it is. I'm an officer though. lol

I've taken a total of 9 AP Courses, passed each one with a C. AP Bio I got a B in both semesters. Only passed two AP tests, Euro History 3, Bio 4.

Attempted one extra year of math (because I took AP Stats along with AP Calc AB in junior year) for a total of 5 years by taking AP Calc BC my senior year, but I received an F grade for first semester. I dropped it for second semester, and UCSB said it's fine because I had already met the recommended 4 years of math. Senior year I only have 5 classes out of 7. My personal statements were written the night before they were due, spent about two hours on each prompt.

If I were you, I'd apply as an undeclared major. I'd say your chances of getting in are going to be pretty high with that many A's. I got most of my A's in freshman year. After that I couldn't care less about high school. Try to get your SAT score a bit higher if you're worried. SAT II Subject Test scores also matter. Are you bilingual? Taking the Spanish/German/Chinese/Korean/Japanese tests are a good option because they're pretty simple. The only exception would be the Chinese and Japanese tests who's scripts are not purely alphabetical.

Hmm... I don't think I left anything else out. Hopefully my stats will give you a positive outlook on your admissions decision at UC Santa Barbara next year. You're doing way better than I did in high school! Good luck to you.

Your opinion doesn't matter. Why would I come into the UCSB threads just to lie?

Honestly though, the only reason I applied to UCSB was because a friend recommended that I do so. I've never even heard of UCSB before a couple days before my UC apps. I turned in my applications 11 minutes before the deadline, and I made a typo on my income information so I didn't qualify for the UC app fee waiver. As such, I didn't want to blow 60 dollars on both Cal and UCLA, so I decided not to apply there. I turned to my friend who recommended UCSB and UCSD, where my chances would be slightly better.

I applied to UCI, UCSB, UCR, UCSD. Accepted by UCSB, UCR. I really wanted to go to Irvine though. Chinese parents know Irvine. Not Santa Barbara.

My mom is still angry that I'm going to UCSB. I'm completely fine with UCSB though, after reading a lot of resources and sites about UC information, UCSB really isn't bad. Also, who wants to be an anteater? Not me. GO GAUCHOS!

Oh yeah, and to Oop: yes, I applied as undeclared.

i got rejected with a 2270 SATI, an 3 800 SATIIs (M2, BIO, LIT), 1 770 SATII (USH), varsity soccer, presidential award in community service, 3 internships (UCSF med, Stanford med, Cordon Bleu-Paris for cooking...im waiting for one i juss applied to at Seagate Technology), 7 5s on AP tests (i only took 3 APs, taking 2 APs right now, but im taking another 7 tests, so 14 AP tests in total..and i WILL get a 5 one these upcoming 7 tests)...and a lot of other things, but i cant remember what else i put down on app..oh like mangerial jobs i had, and a few clubs, and some other crap.....and i still got rejected from a top choice school (SB) =(...i got into Stanford and USC tho =), but im appealing SB and UCD, if i dont get in to either im goin CC and ima a tear that mother up (oh yea i have 23 college credits from the local CC lol..from over all teh summers in high school..ill get another 6 this summer if i t ake teh courses i planeed on taking...forgot about that for a minute)....major was pre-bio
