Hey all. I'm a caucasian boy from NH. UConn is my third choice school, but I can only go if I get a half-tuition scholarship (fortunately, they have afew of those).
SATs:
620 M, 740 CR, 750 W (2110)
3.62 UW GPA, 4.76 W GPA
4 on AP Lang and Comp last year, taking AP Spanish, Psych, and Stats this year
National Honor Society
A bunch of ECs

So what are my chances for both UConn and a half-tuition scholarship?

My daughter is OOS with 3.6 GPA and 30 ACT and was accepted with a half tuition scholarship. She did not make the cut for the honors college, though, which was interesting.

I got in this morning, no honors college. Hopefully I get the half-tuition scholy though, otherwise I might as well chuck my acceptance letter into the trash along with other expensive state school letters (cough UVM cough)

you have to wait for the letter. I didn’t get into the honors college but you’ll have to wait. And make sure to check the page behind the acceptance page; it’s not on the acceptance page.

My D was accepted (OOS) into Nursing program but did not get any scholarship. So does anyone know about UCONNs tuition remission? Will that be awarded at same time as financial aid or with acceptance letter?

My D was accepted EA - GPA 3.5, ACT 28 and received zero aid. We didn’t expect half tuition but was hoping to get a few thousand. OOS tuition will be very steep for us, especially since she was accepted into Binghamton (at $26,000 oos), and some very good private schools gave generous merit aid.

I think it is much harder to get into uconn this year especially if you are out of state. Your GPA and ACT aren’t really that high relative to those currently excepted to receive money. I think its easy to get into Binghamton if you are out of state. Its much harder to get into uconn. I know many people who were accepted to Binghamton and rejected to UCONN. I know Binghamton is a very good school, but my family hated the area.

If you look at past posts, “acceptances” have been all over the place - OOS and IS. Some have received money, some haven’t. My D’s stats are not off the charts but I also don’t believe that my her stats are that low to not have gotten a single dime. It’s just seems that there is no rhyme or reason for some of the acceptances and scholarship awards. Binghamton might accept OOS students more readily than IS because of higher tuition intake, but I feel that UConn has jumped on that bandwagon too.
Binghamton is a better value (UConn OOS is over $12,000 more), and now according to many college rankings, a better school than UConn in some respects. It all comes down what is right for the student and their family.

Sometimes it is disappointing when we get no merit offers, particularly those of us middle class families that get no financial aid, yet cannot afford a huge college bill. We really rely on getting merit. If it does not come, unfortunately, sometimes that means that school of off the list. If it is your child’s first choice, I think it is worth appealling.

You are correct Sportkidmom, it is a family decision and each family makes it their own way. Good luck!

My son wanted to go to U Miami, he loved everything about it except that he got no money (53k). We have been to UCONN everytime my daughter needs a lift home. They both love UCONN except for the fact that my daughter goes there. Its worth going to UCONN just to get 4 years of basketball and football tickets.

I think that there are so many top students applying. My son got into the Honors program and did receive merit aid (IS). I teach AP calculus. Most of my students got in with merit aid as well. Sportkidmom, your d did do very well. It is just that there are many students in the top 5 percent of their class that are applying. I had wished that my son would have applied to some out of state public schools but he didn’t want to. I thought he could maybe get more aid elsewhere.
