My Chances? I will chance back

I would really appreciate your feedback. I'm a rising senior, currently looking at top tier schools.

Asian male, North Carolina

AP Courses: Calc AB/BC (5), AP World (4), AP Chinese (5), AP Bio (5), AP Environmental (5), AP Psych (5), AP Comp Sci A (3) ...i self studied comp sci, bad idea :(

GPA (weighted): 5.33- not that high for my school
SAT 1: 2290 (800 Critical Reading, 800 Math, 690 Writing, 7 on the essay), this was my first and only time taking it in 10th grade

SAT 2: 800 in Math II, 720 in Biology

Extra curricular stuff:
Played piano since I was 6.
Ran long distance as sophomore, cross country as junior
In Key Club.
Over 300 volunteer hours.
On North Carolina's State Math team (top 30 in state).
Did research at ECU and UNC-CH, currently in a computational chemistry research class at school.
Co-founder of a business competition club at school.

School List:
Columbia (ED)
UPenn
MIT
Duke
Yale
UNC-Ch(safety)

Thank you so much.

Your GPA is unreal, SAT is great, great APs, and I think your ECs are above average. No question in at UNC, but the Ivies are gambles for everyone. I’d say lower reach for Duke and Columbia, and medium reach for UPenn, MIT, and Yale. I would be surprised if you didn’t get in to at least one or two of those, though.
Chance back?

How in the heck does that GPA system work…and I thought my school was crazy…
Well, your application is average for an Asian. Welcome to the boat mate. It’s musical chairs and there’s, say, 300 chairs and 1000 of us (numbers completely made up, just go along with it). You’re in at UNC, but the Ivies are all reaches. As an unhooked ORM (over represented minority), I doubt anyone could say much with certainty. I’m relatively sure you’ll get into one of the reaches on your list, but who knows which…

Neets, I just chanced you back. Yeah, I’m pretty confident about Duke since I’m in state, but I’d really like to get into Columbia ED.

@JustAnotherTry: Haha, way too many overachievers :stuck_out_tongue: what does unhooked mean, btw?

Thanks guys =]

Unhooked just means that you don’t have a “super” factor. A “hook” includes being a legacy, or under-represented minority, or earning a major national award, such as being a SIEMENS finalist. Welcome to CC, by the way. Take a look around, you’ll get used to the lingo.

I’d say you’re in amazing shape for Columbia ED. The others may be stretches, especially if you applied regular. Being in state will definitely help with Duke though. I’d be surprised if you didn’t get in there.

Do you go to Science and Math? RComp?

I really hope you’re right, arae3 =]

…yeah. Do I know you?

I don’t know you, I just go there too.

Not a bad resume. I’d say you’re as qualified as a lot of apps for a top tier school, but the lack of a hook doesn’t do you any favors.

Btw, I wouldn’t mind being chanced myself.

I agree with some of the posts above. Great GPA and test scores. Decent EC’s too. I’d say you will have a good chance of getting into at least one of the Ivies. Good luck
