HI I am thinking of applying to NYU, i have a 3.4 gpa and a 2350 on the sat, i am planning on taking the Math 2, Bio E, Physics, and Us History or Lit Sat 2s. I don't have any Aps, but i am planning on taking 2 senior year as well as extra classes in the second part of junior year. I am on the tennis team and am in 2 clubs in which i have leadership positions. Outside school i have work experience, an internship, and about 150 hours of community service Do i have a chance of getting in if i do good on my sat 2s?

What school are you applying to/what’s your intended major?

Your chances of getting into Stern would be way different than your chances of getting into Steinhardt.

Also, NYU doesn’t really have any specific guidelines. You could have perfect scores/GPA and still not get in, so it’s impossible for anyone to judge your chances. you’ll just have to wait until you get an acceptance letter or a rejection letter.

CAS you should definitely be in with that SAT score. It outweighs the GPA significantly.

This may be ignorance on my part, but i wasn’t able to find conclusive results regarding what NYU school i should get into if i want to major in law. I am aware that CAS has law and society as a minor but is their a school in NYU with a major in Law.

cas has pre law…

Your transcript is the most important part of your academics, not the SAT. But your SAT scores are crazy high, especially with such a low GPA. You can do it though :)

I was thinking of law school a while ago and I’ve heard that if you wanna go to law school the adcoms don’t usually like seeing “pre-law”/law-related majors and, as a matter of fact, students who took up law-related stuff (criminology etc) or did “pre-law” (btw it’s not a real major, don’t waste your 50K on it, or any pre-majors really) score the lowest among other majors on the LSAT. Hence if you’re thinking of doing law, just have fun in college and experiment because you will have time to study real law in law school then. ![]()
Show commitment in an activity or two and some leadership positions & you’ll be fine.

You should read some of the threads in the Law School forum.

Good luck!

NYU doesn’t actually have a Pre-Law major, just a Pre-Law track while you major in something else.

yea thats what i found, what do they mean by a pre-law track?

I’m guessing they prepare you for Law School? Like all the classes that are required for Law School and seminars and stuff. I have no idea what I’m talking about though lmao cause I never thought about law school before.

If by the time i sent out my applications i raised my gpa to a 3.5-.6 and had some good teacher recs(including a rec i just received from a city councilman) would stern be too much of a reach.

Yeah but, you shouldn’t go to Stern if you want to Pre-Law. Go for what you want to go, not the prestige of the school.

well pre-law was just me brainstorming, i signed up for a law elective for the spring term and if i get in and like it i will know for sure that it is something i would like to pursue. At this point i am just looking at all of my options and trying to find the best schools i can get into with my grades.

does being the 9th best high school in the country make it easier to get in?

9th best high school?! Oh shiznits, no wonder your GPA was low compared to your SAT score! Haha you’re totally set man. They’ll understand how competitive your school is and take that into consideration for your GPA.

But yeah if you like business go for Stern. It’s easier to internal transfer from Stern to CAS than the other way around if you ever change your mind.

yea i heard that before. Its down to law, med or business and hopefully by application time i will experience all three. Is it possible to apply to both cas and stern, just as a safety? :)

nope, not possible. if it was, I think EVERYONE would.

You don’t need any pre-requisites for law school, so you can basically have fun in college and major in whatever you like! Pre-law track = useless. Just ace the LSATs and maintain a high GPA. Law is really really fun, but I can’t see myself practicing law in real life. If you want to practice like patent law, it would help to major in engineering.

For med school they need pre-reqs so you’ll need to plan your classes to fill them. It depends on the med school you’re looking into, but they usually need 1 year of Bio, Orgo, Physics and Calculus each. If you’re looking into like Hopkins/Harvard/Mayo, you’ll need to have a high GPA (>3.6-ish?) throughout 4 years and really good ECs + really high MCAT scores. Again, you can major in anything you like as long as you fill up these pre-reqs.

Yea, i already have a few classes in case i decide to go to med school: human disease, bio, and medical ethics. Does anyone know if Boston University is a college worth going to. Its rating is good, but so far i have found the student reviews to be divided between easy to get into, and i wish i hadn’t come here currently trying to transfer out.

P.S Most of the negative reviews seem to come from the school of business. Does anyone why?

A lot of BU students are NYU rejects. The two schools are pretty similar. BU’s actually my 2/3rd choice if I don’t get into NYU lmao
