MY CHANCES IN GETTING TEXAS A&M and UT

I live in Texas.
asian
class of 08

unknown rank until senior year.
i know im not in top 10%

gpa: around 3.4-3.6

extra:
JV basketball
300+ voulenteer hours
144 hours at Muscular Dystrophy Camp
10 years of Martial Arts

just got SATs: 1670. I'm so bad at it. especially the verbal reading part =\
i need to take the ACT, is it easier than the SAT?
if so, what score do i need on the ACT to get into A&M?

so what are my chances for Texas A&M with my gpa and current SAT score?

i know UT is gonna be hard.

The average SAT score for UT is in the 1800s. Try to raise your SAT score to something in the 1900s.

I don't know much about ACT, but some people find it definitely easier than the SAT. Not sure if you're one of those people though.

I'm going to be honest and say that currently, your chances are not very high. The UT system accepts everyone in the top 10% as well as people with very high SAT scores that doesn't meet the 10% rule. That's a lot of people right there, and I frankly doubt the UTs/A&M care very much about your ECs like some private schools so 300+ hours of volunteer work, etc. isn't going to help you that much.

Again, try and raise your SAT score, or if you could, get into the top 10%.

I find the ACT much easier than SAT. But it's different for everyone. I got a 1760 on my SAT but got a 28 recently on my ACT. A 28 is about 1950 for SAT. However, my score for ACT was low because I seemed to mis-pace myself. My practice tests for the ACT were giving me a 32 so I just need better pacing and I think I can get in the low 30s which is around 2100.

Anyways, I highly recommend taking ACTs if you're having trouble with SATs. That's the route I took.

Richard, for A&M - if you aren't in the top 10% but you are in the top 25% then you can score a 30 on the ACT (minimum of 27 in English and 27 in math) or a 1300 SAT (minimum of 600 on math and minimum of 600 on critical reading) to qualify for automatic admission. That 1300 is only the math and critical reading score although you do have to take the writing portion for the SAT (or the ACT if you take that).

I don't think UT Austin has any academic auto admit other than the top 10%.... so competition for review admits is very intense.

My son did very well on PSAT - 1 point from commended scholar but bombed the actual SAT. He scored a 30 on the ACT and found it much easier than the SAT (although in all honesty he could bring up the SAT and the ACT by actually opening a study book and spending a little time on it!). So I would encourage you to try the ACT since SAT didn't go so well for you - just don't have the score reported to the school until you know what it is. The ACT will allow you to pick and choose which test date score is reported. I know TOKENADULT would disagree since colleges say they don't care how many times a test is re-taken and some of them superscore, but we didn't want that SAT result involved in the application process since Son's ACT was already so good.....and Son is not taking any more tests since he's reached the 'magic' personal score for himself on that ACT!

Hope I helped you out!

thank you guys.

yeah ima plan to take the ACT.

well i know my cousin made like a a low 1700 something and got accepted into A&M.

ima probably retake SAT and take ACT twice.
