My chances in KAIST

Hi there, I’m a Pakistani Computer Science Undergrad looking for admission in KAIST. I’ll be applying through the NIIED (KGSP) program(embassy track). My CGPA is 3.17(I know it’s really low) and we had relative grading in my university. My final year project was a NLP based Chatbot(not really to be honest, we just played with NLP). So my question is should I even bother applying to KAIST? What are other universities in Korea that I could apply to that offer good graduate computer courses?
Also if you know any other fully funded scholarship programs, I’ll be really thankful. The thing is that I’m a Pakistani female who just wants to go to abroad for more exposure but being a female my parents are really concerned how I’ll be able to work and study (I know it may seem weird to most of you, but it’s a real big deal here in my country), also because they can’t afford to pay for my tuition fee.

My sister (we’re Indian) lived in Daejeon(where KAIST is located) and she knew quite a few students from India and Pakistan in KAIST. According to what they told her, KAIST is not VERY selective when it comes to international students so you should definitely apply. They were happy with their course and loved Korea. You can also look into Kyung Hee University or POSTECH. That being said, you should definitely research a bit more about the program that you’re interested in and read how the current students feel about it because I know someone from SNU who ‘regrets’ coming to Korea for his Master’s due to ‘the lack of job opportunities’.
I’m not sure about scholarship programs but you can look into employment opportunities for students. You can contact KAIST and ask them directly and I’m sure they’ll be happy to answer your questions. I know that it’s kind of a big deal to a lot of parents so you can look up some facebook group for international students and you’ll probably find students from Pakistan in Korea and I guess that can be a bit reassuring.

@zointhesky Thank you so much for the reply, really appreciate it! I also know someone in Daejeon, she’s a Korean, but came to Pakistan for a while and we became friends, and she is telling me to go for it too, so I guess I’ll be applying, Also, I’m looking into Korea University or SNU. I’m not looking for job opportunities, I’ll be coming back to Pakistan after my Masters.
Again, thank you for your answer, I’ll be going now and applying!

You’re welcome! I’ve applied to SNU for fall 2017 too. All the best!

@zointhesky Great! Best of luck to you too! Hope we can meet someday then

@radzxx thank you! And likewise

You should definitely apply to KAIST! I also recommend POSTECH. Yonsei has a lively international student scene as well, and it is in a socially active part of the city. Korea University is a decent choice, but I don’t recommend SNU because it’s kind of in the middle of nowhere. Don’t worry too much about going abroad! There are a lot of Pakistani students at Korean schools who can help you, especially at Yonsei. You will be able to find people who can help you get a good start. (I’m Korean and live in Korea, so if you have any more questions, please feel free to ask!)

@koreanstudent thank you for the reply. I’m currently writing my self intro letter and study goals, do you recommend anything that I should add? Also should I forget SNU and instead apply to Yonsei and POSTECH?

I am an engineering enthusiast looking forward to study in KAIST. South Korea has always been my dream and I am willing to do something for South Korea through my talent. I have done the Edexcel IGCSE exam and have achieved the grades of Chemistry: A, Biology: A, English: B, Math: A (91%), Physics: A* Bengali: A, ICT: B, Further Pure Math: B on 2016 June. I have also achieved a World ranking of Tenth and Oman’s ranking of Fifth in Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics June 2016 exam under London Examinations held in Sohar, Oman. I have also taken the SAT exam on December 3rd and have received a score of 1180/1600. I have also done the Edexcel AS Exam and my results are coming out in 17 August 2017. Attached with this email are my certificates and extra achievement certificates. I also have achieved a medal from the United Kingdom for my result. My study medium from the primary has been English and my exams are of the International Curriculum Edexcel so kindly inform me if I require the IELTS exam. I am willing to enroll in 2018. I am looking forward to your response and it matters to me a lot.
