My chances into UC Berkeley and UCLA

-Hey everybody - long time browser, first time poster ...

-I am a CA resident, so I only applied to UC schools as they are much less expensive than other universities would be for me.

-Anyway, as the title says, I am wondering about my chances for getting into UC Berkeley and UCLA. My dream right now is to go to the Haas School of Business at Berkeley...anyway...here it goes....

Oh yah, white male, middle income = /

SAT 1:
-Verbal = 800
-Math = 720
-Writing = 760 (10 on essay)

SAT 2:
-Biology(M) = 800
-USHistory = 780
-Math 2C = 680 (Ouch!)

Classes:
-Frosh - AP World History(A/A, 5)
-Soph. - AP Spanish(B/B, 3) - AP Euro(A/A, 5) - AP Bio(B/A, 5)
-Junior - AP USHistory(A/A, 5) - AP Chem.(A/A, 5) - AP Eng.Lang.(A/A, 5) - Math 150-151(College Level Calculus...A/A)
-Senior - AP Psych(?) - AP Stats(?) - AP EngLit(?) ---(I'm sure A's in all and 5's.)

Weighted GPA from Soph. and Junior years = 4.33 which is only rank 21 at my school out of about 400 seniors....very competitive public high school.

Extra-Curricular:
-4 years Football - 2 year letterman and starter
-2 years Track - 2 year letterman
-6 years Boy Scouts of America - Eagle Scout + Patrol Leader(Lead to Honor Patrol Award) +Junior Assistant Scout Master + 3 Religious Medals for Catholic Faith + hundreds of hours of community service.

-2 years Academic League
-4 years Math Team/Club

Work Experience:

-I'm a fairly good writer, so I'm pretty confident about my essays.

-If I forget anything important, let me know and I will do my best to add/clarify - thanks for your help!!!

Oh, and to give everyone an idea of how competitive the public school I go to is:
-3 Students this year into Stanford ED/EA
-3 Students into Harvard ED/EA
-2 Yale ED/EA
-1 Princeton ED/EA
- Lots of others I don't know...
-Always 4 to 6 that go to Berkeley every year, I'm sure many more get in.

And if this helps, I am applying to the Economics major at Berkeley(even though I would like to transfer to Haas after Sophomore year) and to Business Economics at UCLA.

wats ur gpa

My official transcript GPA is 4.33

ur a shoe in for ucla and berkeley

-Thanks namkim, any other opinions? I have heard about alot of weirdness with the UC application process.

u can always appeal if you get rejected man.

you have like almost as same stats as i do and peopel tell me that ucla and berkeley are safe matches for me.

Thanks alot for the input, namkim.

How does the appeal work???

i dont know the specifics, but i know that if you get rejected, you can get peoepl (teachers, school faculty, etc) to sign a petition and write a letter to the UC's.

then they'll review you again and you know the rest

UCLA/UCB: Match

Namkim, uhh... In my opinion, I think you have much better stats than the original poster.

shrugs

I'd say the original poster is a Berkeley Match.

Namkim's stats:
GPA: 4.0 uw
Rank: 1/756 <----- Reason why he has such a better shot

SAT I: 2300 (750v, 800m, 750w) <------ This too

SAT II:
Math2c - 800
Korean - 800 (yes im a native =[ )
Physics - 780

^And those. :)

@flippy

i have a bit higher scores and gpa, but i dont have EC's like 4 years of football, 6 years of boyscout (eaglescout) etc.

I've heard that UC's are different than most private schools in the sense that they consider GPA and SAT's as almost 90% of the admission.

The other 5% is EC, and the difference between your EC's and his is maybe about that yours is 2/3 of his. So that means he has about a 2% higher chance counting only ECs.

thats a very comprehensive review. nice research man.

maybe you can tell me my chances for ivies in my thread

-Anyway, as the title says, I am wondering about my chances for getting into UC Berkeley and UCLA. My dream right now is to go to the Haas School of Business at Berkeley...anyway...here it goes....

Isnt Haas closed for freshman?

Yeah Haas is closed for Freshman. It's only a 2 year program for Undergrads.

-Thanks for all the valuable info everyone

-And yah, Haas is only open to undergrads for application after sophomore year. Thanks again!

mwestes:

UCB/UCLA: Match

I can't imagine you getting rejected. Don't worry dude, youre in!

@ namkim: I'm in a similar position, though my grades and SAT scores aren't quite as high. I think good grades and SAT scores are the main thing considered in UC Apps, but that ECs are much more important when talking about top-tier private universities.

@ original poster: Your resume looks impressive--your grades are good and your involvement in out-of-school activities mark you as a v worthy candidate for the schools you're applying to. Your chances look very good to me. In fact, you may want to consider a few private reach schools as well.
