My Chances into UC Berkeley

I've applied to 7 schools already and applied to PhD in Mechanical Engineering but applied to MS wherever I couldn't it.

(total of 3 years)

School: Georgia Tech
Major: Mechanical engineering
Minor: Computer science

GPA 3.90 (most of my curriculum over now) Major GPA also 3.90

By the time applications come:
-2 semesters (and counting) in one lab (on design and modeling)
-2 semesters in another (on fuzzy systems and control, a bit of mathematical modeling)
-1 semester (2 years ago) in another (on material science..hated it lol)
...all labs in georgia tech, under the guidance of a professor

LOR's :
1)Professor of the first lab (Associate prof graduated from CMU) I will be applying to CMU because I want to focus on an area that requires the integration of cs and ME
2) Professor of the second lab (PROF GRADUATED FROM BERKELEY)
3) Professor who taught me fluids..We got to know each other in a more personal level (Prof graduated from Stanford/Caltech)

The first two were also professors of one of my classes, so they will touch on both aspects

Awards: Presidential Undergrad research award (nothing big, just a stipend for my research, but an award nonetheless)

Pubs and Presentations: Again nothing big, no publications, I only presented my work to couple of labs in tech. Nothing at a conference or anything.

GRE: 520/800 (V/Q)

Other: Differential Equations TA, tutor for core classes and ME classes for 3 years, vice president of ASME chapter in Tech, program coordinator of a club called Student movement (service), Freshman Seminar Class team leader.

Additional Attachments:

Paper I submitted to Dr. Chen documenting my research with him

Presentation of my research with Dr. Paredis (which I presented to my lab)

Research paper I wrote in high school...for which I got an A from IBO

Paper I wrote for a project for my Computer Science Parallel Algorithms...which can be a huge help for Mechanical Engineering

Your input on my chances of getting into my top choices would be great. I really need it. I've become worried because I've got rejected from MIT, Princeton. I got accepted into Stanford but without funding so it would be tough for me to go there. I am pretty sure I won't get into Caltech because of its usual few spots available (I heard only 20 people are getting in or something). There are other universities I applied to but I feel like they are a huge drop for what I want to do...get a PhD and probably become a professor...

I've applied for MS/PhD. Do everyone who get into MS/PhD for MechE in Berkeley get funding? I really hope so!!

What are my chances of getting in with full funding? Do I have like a 50-50, likely or not very likely chance of getting in?

I think my SOP was good...I say that because I didn't get rejected from MIT till last week so I made like the first cut which was early-mid Feb...

I'm trying to decipher the last couple of events into how likely i will get into Berkeley. Is it as selective as the other elite schools? If most of the students who got into UCB go to the other universities, I should have an ok chance? Lastly, Is it very biased towards California residents

Thanks in advance!

Your stats are pretty good. I believe that you will get into Berkeley. I got accepted to Mech. Eng. PhD program for Fall11 a few weeks ago and belive me that your stats are very close to mine. The application papers are sent to the related professors. If one of them wants to study with you, your funding is certain but be patient until April 1. Good Luck…

Residency doesn’t come into play for graduate admissions.

This is silly if you’ve already applied since nothing said here will affect the outcome. But anyway, Berkeley is about as selective as MIT & Caltech and slightly more selective than Stanford. For what it’s worth, most ME admits have heard by now and rejections are sent out in early April. Based on gradcafe, you should hear back by this week at the latest if admitted, else it was a rejection.

Did you get funding as well?
