My Chances (MIT, Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, Northwestern...)

Yeah, I made a mistake there, what I meant was Computer Science or computer engineering.

Just curious (or should I say really surprised), neelish, why did you say that I was "in" for MIT? typo?

Also, still wondering about how studying calc independently may affect my chances. Thanks!

Okay...first of all...who takes that many Sat II's and AP exams? Not to mention you score ridiculously high on all of them...just because you got a 790/800 on a section doesn't make you a failure. You make it sound like you are on the borderline for these universities. With a resume like that, I think every college will accept you AND give you a full ride.

I wish I could get scores like that. I can't even come close. I took three AP tests in high school and got 2's on all of them. Even AP Chem, which shocked me because I got an A in AP Chem and I'm a chemical engineering major right now.

Although you have your heart sent on "the best" schools...I wouldn't overlook schools like Pittsburgh, Ohio State, Illinois, Purdue, etc...just because they aren't MIT doesn't make them bad schools. I go to Pittsburgh and they just happen to have a pretty darn good engineering school. They have a strong computer science program if that is what you want to go for. May I suggest computer engineering? One of my friends is a computer engineer...it is basically a combination of computer science classes (dealing with mostly Java programming) and electrical engineering (circuits, signals and systems, data structures, etc). It definitely will give you an edge in the working world over kids who just have computer science degrees, since a computer engineer is basically a dual major in computer science and electrical engineering.

comment, you dont get to choose which SAT scores are sent anymore, they are all sent. no choices.

Welcome to College Confidential, Charman. You will feel small here.

Okay, it's been two months now since my "what are my chances" post (almost) and I've finished applying to all my colleges. My stats have changed a little however. I did not get Varsity A team for debate, I was B team, but I reported on my activities sheets that I was just a Varsity team (not specifying which team). I won a debate award at a regional tournament. My GPA has a pretty serious upward trend for the three years I was at my current school (3.794, 3.898, and 4.3ish for first semester senior year). My freshman year, I attended a school in NY where I had a 4.0 but this is because this school did not give A- so A range started from 89.5 (thus it was easier to achieve a 4.0 gpa). I added Worcester Polytechnic Institute to my list of colleges. My essays were a bit corny and I have to admit, I did not spend as much time as probably most people spend on writing their essays. I also am taking "Badminton and Tennis," a PE class, to fulfill my graduation requirement second semester senior year.

So, now with this additional information, I'd like to hear some people's takes on my chances. Thanks in advance!

You know... I'm not an adcom, and I suck at rating chances for ppl.
But I have no idea how expo can be a match student for uni's like Penn.

Firstly, he's EC's are very dull and hardly shows any dedication nor commitment. Out of the 4 ECs he have, he is only a member for half of it and has only done it for 1 year. And 4 year sport isn't a remarkable achievement either.

And he is a international; the competition is twice as hard and the fact that he's Asian further works as a disadvantage. The majority of the international students have experienced diverse culture, and yet they still get rejected. Attending a international school in your home country Japan isn't impressive at all.

For community service, is that all you have done? "clean-up of Mt. Takao" sounds like a one day trip to a mountain for some soft drink can pick up. Your awards arent top notch either. You do have quite a few math related awards, but considering the fact that you've only achieved a one in AIME shows that those awards don't hold much value. Several USAMO qualifiers (these are ppl who've scored 7,8 or more on AIME) get rejected at placed like MIT.

But I do want to congratulate you in your academic achievement. 5's in 7 AP's is rather rare (calc BC counts as 2 AP's right? Calc BC and AB). However, as you know, academic is only a small picture of the admission process. And again, there are several internationals asians who achieve best of the best. So realli, your stats are very mediocre in my opinion apart from the academic achievements.

Heres what I think:

MIT: Super Reach
Stanford: Super Reach
Carnegie Mellon: Match
Northwestern: Math
Johns Hopkins: I dunno how competitive JHU is.
UPENN: High Reach (but better chance than Columbia)
Columbia: High Reach
Cornell: Reach (I dont think Cornell will think highly of your EC's or other factors)

If I sounded rude, I apologize sincerely, but you did say "be brutal" :D

Can anyone plz correct me in any parts where I'm wrong?

I've been expecting a post like this for a while. It's true, I've never really done any community service and how you described it ("one day trip to a mountain for some soft drink can pick up") is exactly on the mark. I started doing ECs junior year because of my situation and I'm sure the adcoms can see through it. To tell the truth, I'm really not that good at golf either.

I have a few things I'd like to correct/comment on. I'm not applying as an international student (if that will change things). I am a green card holder so I will be applying as a US resident. Though it may look like I did debate for a half-assed reason, I did cover up for it in all my apps saying how much I did enjoy it and how much it changed me from just a pure math/science person to a all round person (which is neither a lie nor an exaggeration). And finally, I'm not sure the "he's asian" thing really applies to Japanese. Maybe all Asians are grouped together, I am not sure, but if Asians ARE separated by race, Japanese (pure-blooded Japanese from Japan) are one of the smallest minorities that apply to American universities.

Thanks for the brutalness... It scared me a lot but at the same time comforted by the fact that with that many matches, I'm bound to get into one of them right? hehe...

any more comments...?

Sorry about the assuption that Japanese = Korean/Chinese Asian group. But from what I've heard, they do study alot, hence the uber cool gadgets and games they make (I'm still a big fan of pokemon :D). btw, I'm korean.

and nope, I don't have any further comments. Good luck getting into the colleges.

MIT...Reach
Stanford...Super Reach
Carnegie Mellon...Match/Safety
Northwestern...Match
Johns Hopkins...Slight Reach
UPENN...Reach
Columbia...Reach
Cornell...Match/Safety
