I'm a sophomore in high school, and I moved halfway across the country, to New Jersey this year. My cumulative GPA is about a 3.7 at the moment, but I got a C last year, my (unweighted) GPA this year so far is about a 3.9, and I don't see that going down so by the end of high school I should have about a 3.85-3.9 or so. I take all honors classes except Spanish, but I got a 99% in that class so my teacher. wants me to take honors next year. I was in Knowledge Bowl last year, but my school this year doesn't have that so I can't join, and I'm not currently in any clubs. I will join Ping Pong Club this year, and maybe another club or two, but I don't think I'll be joining sports, and if I do, it will be bowling or something like that. Also, I plan on being in NHS.

I took the PSAT this year, in October, so basically as a freshman, and I got a 1560. I'm expecting this to be about a 1800-2000 by senior year. I don't have any community service either, but I will be starting this summer with some friends, with about 30 hours. Where can I get community service? And does it help for college if I get a job? I looked on collegeboard.com and it looks like I'm about average to high-average for NYU admission, but I don't know about my extracurriculars. I plan on majoring in Business-Finance.

For Stern, you should have an SAT score of around 2,100+
An unweighted GPA of around 3.7+
You should also have ECs relating to business; as Stern will look highly at these. I.e. Stern will not look favorably upon someone who just kind of decided they want to do business - you have to show a continuing or continued interest in business.

I forgot to mention that I’m joining Future Business Leaders of America, as soon as they have an opening. I’m very interested in business, and it’s really all I would even consider for a career. I just want a good way to show it. An SAT score of around 2100 may be possible with some rigorous studying for me. I didn’t study or prepare at all for the PSATs, because I thought it wasn’t important until the normal SAT. Also, it says in various articles that the average SAT score for some one in stern was a 1500 if I remember correctly, why is it that everybody says you need a 2100?

When they say 1500, they mean Critical Reading + Math. They say that because the writing section is a relatively new portion of the SAT, and that either because of conservatism or belief that there are flaws with that section, universities don’t place as much emphasis on that section.

As a sophomore, you probably don’t remember the days of only CR + M, but 1500 on the SAT will get your foot in the door at every school. Recall, though, that this isn’t the only thing that matters. Do things related to business and spend your winter break doing practice tests (and learning from your mistakes).

Thank you for explaining, and what business related things can I do besides Future Business Leaders of America? My school doesn’t have any other clubs related to business or economics in any way.
