My chances of getting in?

Hey guys, I'm going to be graduating High School in the class of '11 and I'll be applying to UofM some time this year. I have been considering Michigan as of late and I'd like to know my chances of getting in.

It's not that great :/.... But I think I have somewhat of a chance because I'm in-state.

What do you guys think?

Hmmm…hard to say. Your ACT is a little on the low side for Michigan. Have you considered retaking? Same for GPA, try to show improvement for first semester grades. Nice leadership for the ec’s, though, I would say that’s your strong point, try to emphasize this. Make sure your essays are REALLY good. But you’re instate, so that should help. Good luck!

Thanks. I retook my ACT in June and got the 28, I’m probably not going to retake it. I will definitely do very well my first semester this upcoming year.

Anyone else care to offer their view?

Really knock that Diversity essay out of the park! Can’t help the baseball analogy…good luck!!

Even for instate, your GPA and ACT are a bit low. Definitly try to raise your GPA more than anything else since you do not plan to retake the ACT. UofM may be a slight reach for you, but you seem to have a increasing GPA throught your years so try emphasize that in your essays.

I’d say your chance of getting in is 60-70% (:
Raise your GPA and write really good essays (as you said you would) Getting a recommendation from someone who’s worked with you or have seen you work in one of your leadership positions would also help out a lot . Good luck!

I really don’t like your chances very much. One of my friends who applied to UMich was somewhat similar to you. He had a 3.65 gpa but a 32 ACT and he had fairly strong ECs just like you. He also had an upward trend in gpa and had good recs and essays. Additionally he went to one of the most competitive public high schools in the nation and was in state (it has about 70-80 students go to UM each year) and he was waitlisted and ultimately rejected. I know quite a few people like that actually. From what I can see, you seem to now need at least a 3.7 gpa and a 31 ACT if you are either White or Asian to get admitted if you are in state and not particularly special. There are a lot more strong students that are staying in state because of the economy so I say work as hard as you can this year to try and get a 4.0 gpa and retake the ACT because a 28 just isn’t gonna cut it. I’ll be honest your English and Math (the two most important for UM) are pretty atrocious. Unless you get that up, your chances are weak. So I wish you the best of luck and hopefully you will be able to accomplish everything you need to get admitted into UMich.

Please, you obviously know little about college admissions and should not be posting in this thread to give chances.

Well ****, this does not look good. I can probably get my GPA up to a 3.75-3.8 by the end of the first semester of my senior year. I may as well retake my ACT once more. I appreciate everyone’s help though.

I recommend working hard on your essays. You seem to have some good credentials although your gpa/act is slightly lower than average. Things to emphasize might be the diversity aspect as well as your experiences in leadership.

Just to try to win over the admissions officers by persuading them that you can benefit the Michigan community and that you can succeed in college academically despite your scores.

I would highly recommend retaking the ACTs and trying to score higher. A couple more points and your chances will be much better.
