I’m trying to assess my chances of getting into Cornell. Please let me know what you think. I’m an international student from India. My SAT score is 2130/2400(97th percentile). The break up is 780/800 in Math(99th percentile), 680/800 in Critical Reading(94th percentile) and 670/800 Writing(94rd percentile). My essay score was 8/12.
My SAT subject test scores were 800/800 in Math level 2(85th percentile). 780/800 in physics(84th percentile) and 750/800 in chemistry(73rd percentile).
My TOEFL iBT score is 116/120. The breakup is 30/30 reading, 30/30 speaking, 28/30 writing and 28/30 listening
My scores in my Secondary School Leaving examinations (Conducted by Indian government) were 97/100 in Math. 99/100 in English. 99/100 in Science. 96/100 in French. 90/100 in Social Studies.
My predicted scores for my Higher secondary leaving examinations are 197/200 in Math. 193/200 in Physics. 191/200 in chemistry. 189/200 in computer science. 191/200 in English and 191/200 in French.
A score above 65% in India is considered first class and according to www.foreignstudent.com a score above 65% in and Indian exam is equivalent to US grade A. So basically my GPA is approximately a 4.0 unweighted.
It is difficult for a US student to gain admission to an Ivy League-level school; it’s even harder for international students.
Therefore, if you really want to attend a US university, I suggest that you do what most students on this site claim to do: apply to multiple schools. Whether you apply to three, five, or ten-plus, you increase your odds of being accepted by one of them if you apply to more than one of them.
I have no idea about your level of knowledge of the various universities and colleges, so I’ll list the entire Ivy League (since you mentioned Cornell) along with some other quality private and public universities. These are all good schools at which you can receive an excellent education (and there are many more…):
Harvard / Yale / Princeton / Columbia / U of Pennsylvania / Dartmouth / Brown / Cornell / Stanford / MIT / Caltech / U of Chicago / Duke / Northwestern / Johns Hopkins / UC-Berkeley / Vanderbilt / Rice / Washington U in St. Louis (WUSTL) / Georgetown / U of Michigan / Notre Dame / Emory / Carnegie Mellon / U of Virginia / UCLA / U of Southern California / Boston College / NYU / Tufts / U of Wisconsin / U of North Carolina / U of Illinois / Georgia Tech / Tulane / Brandeis / Boston U / Wake Forest / U of Washington / Lehigh / U of Texas / Northeastern / UC-Davis / UC-San Diego / UC-Santa Barbara / U of Minnesota / Case Western Reserve / SMU / U of Florida / Purdue / Indiana U / U of Maryland / Ohio State U / Penn State U / Texas A&M / Rutgers U…
There are also Liberal Arts Colleges, which tend to feature small class sizes and nearly 100% emphasis on undergraduates, but fewer majors from which to choose (EG: with a few exceptions, they do not offer Engineering):
Williams / Amherst / Pomona / Swarthmore / Wellesley / Middlebury / Bowdoin / Carleton / Haverford / Claremont McKenna (CMC) / Harvey Mudd / Vassar / Washington & Lee / Hamilton / Davidson / Grinnell / Colby / Reed / Bates / Smith / Barnard / Bryn Mawr / Colgate / Macalester / Oberlin…
There are a lot of quality schools in the US. To help ensure that you are accepted into one, it would be a good idea to apply to multiple schools – like some of the schools I’ve listed. Researching them would be beneficial to your process, if you have not done so already.
The colleges I’m applying to brown, cwru, cornell, dartmouth, duke harvard, lehigh, nyu, northeastern, northwestern, princeton, purdue, rice, stanford,SUNY at buffalo, tufts, miami, pennsylvania, vanderbilt, yale, mit and uiuc. My intended major is mechanical engineering
I want to study mechanical engineering. I interned at Times of India(journalism company) last year. I’ve been writing articles for their newspaper ever since. I’m pretty confident that my recs will be really good. Students at my school are divided into 4 houses and I was captain of one of the houses. I’ve participated in and won theater competitions, debates, stand up comedy events and quizzes. Most of these were intra city events between students of many schools. And yes, I will be applying for aid
