I'm a senior in high school and am planning to go to a 4 year college (UCI, UCSD). I have a gpa of 3.7. This year, I'm enrolled in AP Calc BC and AP Stats, and last year, I was in AP Calc AB (got a 5 on AP test) and English 11 Honors. Im taking SAT this week, aiming for 2000 and above. I am also taking SAT II Chinese and Math II. For side information, I started schooling in the USA 3 years ago (sophomore year) and have like 60-70 hours of community service hours. What are my chances of getting into UCI/UCSD?

Are you in-state for California? You need to calculate your UC GPA, see link: <a href=“GPA Calculator for the University of California – RogerHub”>http://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/
Intended major? I will not chance you until you have a concrete SAT score. Speculating will get you nowhere.

For UCI, a 2000 should be good.
For UCSD, you need to aim for a 2100+ to be competitive.

Repost when you get your scores along with intended major and EC’s.

Major: Computer Science

EC: not much, just key club, math club, Chinese club, anime club for 2 years. Tutoring (peer to peer) and office helping for 2 years.

UC GPA: 3.68

Let’s just say sat is 2000 ( pls? im anxious :3 )

And i am a California resident (not a citizen yet but a green card holder) and also a first generation in my family who is going to UC.

Your UC GPA is low for both schools and especially for CS since it is very competitive and so getting an SAT over 2100+ will definitely be needed to offset the GPA. FYI: UC’s weigh GPA more heavily than test scores.

My younger son applied last year for CS. UC GPA: 3.73 and ACT 31. Denied by UCD/UCI/UCSB. Accepted UCR.
Did not apply to UCSC or UCSD. Currently attending SDSU.

Averages for Freshman 2014::::
UCI: GPA-4.05 SAT: 1867 ACT: 27
UCSD: GPA-4.13 SAT: 2019 ACT: 30
UCLA: GPA-4.17 SAT: 2067 ACT:30

If you want CS, you need to be above the average due to the competition.
You need to consider, UCSC and UCR and possibly some Cal States such as CSUF, SDSU, SJSU and CPP.

Good Luck and get a great score and write some amazing essays. You never know what will happen, just have some good safeties as backup.

Do they consider the fact that I just arrived to the US if I write a really persuasive essay? Or no?

If you write an outstanding essay, they will take that into account, but it is very hard to say since essays are so subjective. You have good Stats, but sometimes that is not enough. You need to find a few Match and Safety schools, were you have a better than average chance for acceptance. My younger son’s #1 choice was Cal Poly SLO and was denied, but he really likes the CS program at SDSU and is happy with his choice. There is no reason not to have a few reaches on your college list, you just do not want to get shut out and have no acceptable backups if you are not accepted into your reach schools.
The simple fact is that the UC’s get more and more competitive each year with an increasing amount of applicants each year. UCLA received around 100,000 applications last year and SDSU around 77,000. That is a huge amount of applications to go through and evaluate between December and March when acceptances are released.
All you can do is work hard and hope for the best.

UCs might overlook standardized test scores but not UC GPA. That’s why there is CC for newly arrived students.
