My chances of getting into UF?

If I submit an application to UF, I have to pay a fee. I want to know if my chances are even remotely "okay" so that I don't waste my money because I'm poor. Please read all of it before you give your opinion. Thanks.

My stats:

Unweighted GPA: 3.22, Weighted GPA: 4.34

AP Scores: World History = 3, Biology = 3, Calculus = 5

FCAT Science: 5 (I'm 1 out of 2 at my school to score a 5)

SAT: 1250 = 680 math, 570 reading, 530 writing (I am retaking them to increase my scores)

Senior year: AP Calculus BC, AP Physics C, AP Chemistry, AP English IV, Government Honors, Economics Honors, Space Technology (Rocket team). Dual enrollment: Physics with Calculus I + lab, Calculus with Analytical Geometry II, Fitness Lifestyle Design.

Junior year: AP Biology, AP Calculus AB, Physics Honors, English III Honors, U.S. History Honors, Research III Honors, Personal Fitness, Web Design.

Sophomore year: AP World History, English II Honors, Algebra II Honors, Chemistry I Honors, Creative Writing III Honors, Precalculus Honors, Marine Biology Honors.

Freshmen year: Spanish III Honors, Lit and the Arts Honors, Geometry Honors, Critical Thinking, Health, Algebra II Honors, Biology I Honors, English I Honors, World Geography Honors.

Activities:

National Honor Society, Key Club, Math Club (Mu Alpha Theta), Volunteer Broward, Rocket Team (SLI, TARC), Math Competitions (scored high on the Mandelbrot).

75 service hours

top 5% of my class. Rank: 26/530

Intended Major: Physics

First person in my family to go to college.

White, non-hispanic, female

100% Bright Futures scholarship

5 Letters of recommendation from my science and math teachers.

I know my SAT scores and GPA are lacking but is there a chance that I can get accepted if my essay is GREAT and because of the classes I have taken? I am taking the SAT Reasoning on March 14th, and the SAT subject tests (math II, physics, biology) in April/May.
Here is the link to UF's statistics on admission etc.:

THANKS!!!

Your SAT scores don't add up, shouldn't it be 1780, not 1250?
ANd wow your stats are impressive. I can't say much about whether you can get into UF, but I wish you luck =]]

Your unweighted GPA and top 5% status seems weird, but looking at your weighted, they make sense. You said you have 100% Bright Futures but your SAT doesn't meet the requirement...what's your ACT score?

Overall, your chances are OK. The College Search information is outdated, you should go check the UF website in a few months to see the Class of 2013 information.

Your rank and course rigor kinda off sets your GPA. They are big on top 10% status, and you reach that. Improve your test scores, that's your main weakness. FGIC will help you. ECs are okay. You have a chance, but it's not a lock-in, but it's not completely out of reach either.

UF doesn't require nor read recommendation letters, so do not bother sending it. They also do not use the SAT Subject tests for admissions at all. If you go to a tour they will tell you these two things probably a million times. (I would know, one of mine were horrendous and I still got into Honors!) So, if I was you, I would focus on prepping for the Reasoning test and get above a 1300/1950+ and I think you will be have a shot.

Good luck

Oh, and if you are low-income, just request a fee waiver from your school or College board. That's what I did, I was issued 4 waivers from the College Board and four from the ACT

1250 is for the math and reading only.

I know I can raise my SAT scores at least 20 points if not more (I've only taken them once). That's why I said 100% Bright Futures. I was a slacker up until 11th grade. I got straight A's all year in my junior year and brought my GPA from a 2.9 to a 3.1.

Should I wait until my SATs are scored, and then submit my application? Will it really matter if I send my application in now or wait until mid July? I missed the November deadline so it seems like it wouldn't make a difference...

Are you currently a senior or junior? I am confused. If you are a senior, I believe that they stopped taking applications on March 1st.

If you are a junior, they will accept test scores until December 31st if you applied by November 1st.

I am a senior... OHH NO!!! Are you serious? I can't apply now? Damnit, that happened with my 1st choice, FSU... now my 2nd choice? Now I am left with the only option of UCF... great.

If you are just applying to college now...then...wow. Did nobody teach you about deadlines? Florida's was technically November 1, although they accept apps on a space-available (in other words, none) basis through March 1 and FSU has a January 21 final deadline. If you knew all of this and still waited until waaay past last second to apply to your FIRST CHOICE SCHOOLS then it's your own damn fault and you deserve this. If your counselors never told you about these things, then your counseling department is deplorable. Then again, you probably should have had the initiative to actually research what the hell a deadline is and you would not be going through this. Yeah, it's harsh, but you deserve it. Oh well, you might make it into UCF. Since their admissions are rolling they've practically filled the class by now but you never know.

^Well that's not true...people who applied late still get in, but it's much, much harder.

My friend applied in the beginning of February, got notified that he got in for Fall and Honors at UF the other day. He had 3.6 unweighted, but like a 1500/1600 SATs though.

Although, I agree it is the OP's fault that she waited so long, and didn't even take the initiative to do rudimentary research about deadlines; I find your post too abrasive. Some low-income families actually DISCOURAGES the kids to colleges, so you have to be sensitive to her possible background. Yes, it is still not excuse but lets not get into a high pedestal and practically demean her.

Maggie, good luck in college. You obviously have taken quite a rigorous schedule and should be prepared to go to UCF. Just try to take this as a lesson and learn to thoroughly research things that may have a huge impact on your life, like colleges.

I'm not a FL resident... My adjustment of status only got approved on February 27th, 2009. That's why I didn't apply... of course I knew the deadlines, I just didn't think that deadline meant ABSOLUTELY no getting in past that date. I couldn't go to college without INS documents which I didn't have prior to 02-27-09. I basically JUST found out that I CAN go to college and get FL tuition rates instead of the bizarre international rates. Geez. I do look these things up. I'm sorry that I left that bit of info out. I didn't want to bring it up but I now I find that it was probably necessary so that people could understand the situation better. Maybe I should take a year off and get a job instead of college if this doesn't work out...

Apply early to FSU. August, 2009 they start again. Early means better chances for admission, scholarships and dorms.

Your chances at UF look slim without a higher SAT. Our flagship public here in FL is famous for looking mainly at objective stats. Other than SAT you're scores are within range.

I think they would deny you on the spot if you sent all those recs in hehe.

Unfortunately... it's really to late to be in the running for UF and FSU. Perhaps waiting till next year is a viable option- but don't loose track of your goals. Be productive and aim for FSU/UF!

Good Luck

FSU is the other Florida flagship university.
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florida_State

I think I'm going to apply for the Spring term 2010 at UF. I'm most likely going to pass all of my AP exams this May (except for Eng Lit), so I'll have 6 AP credits and 3 community college credits. I hope I'll still be able to graduate with the class of 2013... and my GPA is going to increase at least to a 3.4 (assuming straight A's) AND my SAT's will increase too. It's probably better if I wait - it will give me time to save up money and get settled into north FL.

There can only be one Florida flagship university in the state of Florida. Florida is the most selective university in the state and ranks higher than FSU. Just look at the admission rate for 2009 class and the kids who were rejected with 4.0 GPA's. FSU is a second tier university with a great football team and excellent academics but lacks the prestige of the University of Florida. Yes, I know I'm biased since I will be attending UF in 2009 Fall.

"FSU is a second tier university with a great football team"

You are obviously not biased enough :p

I know a lot of idiots who got into UF (the kids who take AP art and SGA), and I don't think that class rank and GPA's are accurate. Anyone who thinks that GPAs are all that matters is a fool because it's based on the classes you take. I hope they drop like flies after the first semester. I think that school is biased, but it has a good physics department.
