I just finished my junior year of high school, and I really want to go to UNC Chapel Hill (I’m in state). What are my chances of getting in with these numbers? I HAVE looked at the undergraduate numbers from UNC’s website, but I honestly am still uncertain as to whether I would make it or not.
In-state applicant
GPA UW: 3.88 (By the time my first semester of senior year is finished, it should be 3.9+)
GPA W (out of 5.0): 4.5 (Should be 4.6+ by end of first semester senior yr)
SAT: 1450 (out of 1600)
I am top 10% of my class, if that matters
Clubs:
NHS
NTHS
Rhoe Kappa
Mu Alpha Theta
FBLA
HOSA
Health Sciences Academy
Volunteer hours: around 200
Sports: Track and field + lacrosse
I will most likely get some good letters of recommendation from the teachers I plan to ask.
Please let me know if you think I will get into this college (don’t sugarcoat)
Thanks in advance to anyone replying! Let me know if I need to add anything else that will factor into the application process (other than essays, etc).
@saadnc Get started on essays and supplements EARLY. UNC should like tradition already have their prompts up by sometime this summer. Get ideas down and start writing drafts. For students with high stats, essays and supplements for UNC can make or break admissions. Thus, you need to put quite a bit of thought into these supplements and writing samples. Additionally, when the common app portal opens this summer, make sure the same meticulousness is put towards your activities section. Tell, don’t show. Best of luck! It’s a whirlwind of emotions but all worth it in the end!
@Pastpower Wow, thanks so much for the advice, I’ll definitely do all of the things you stated! Just based on my numbers, do you think I have a good shot of being accepted into UNC?
At this point, the only thing you can do is write some pretty kickass essays. Agree with @chb088 - You have an excellent chance as long as you’re not in the RTP/ Greater CLT area.
We are Wake County and I still maintain you would have gotten in this year. Your SAT and class rank would have gotten you in. When I went to UNC from Charlotte (in the 1990s) it was known if you were top 10% you would get in. I had heard how much harder it is now, my daughter was top 2 or 3 percent in Wake County and was worried about getting in. In the end, about 20 classmates are attending and more were accepted but attending Duke, Davidson, NSCU etc.
@chb088@Essel@rphx2nc Thanks for the advice and support. I am not from Wake County or the triangle region, so hopefully that boosts my chances of getting in. Note that although my class rank is top 10%, my school is not super-competitive (it’s an average to slightly above average school) and there are about 400 individuals in my class.
I’m making good progress on my application, wondering if applying ED affects chances of getting accepted at all? Would appreciate if someone would offer some insight.
@gandalf78 thanks for answering - do you think I should apply EA or wait for regular desicion so I can get my fall semester grades in? (Taking 3 APs and 2 honors classes fall semester, I’m 90% certain I can get in A in all, as they are easier AP classes that everyone usually gets high grades in due to nice teachers)
@saadnc Since you aren’t in the Triangle or Charlotte area, I can’t imagine that your wouldn’t get in. Can you get teachers who are alumni to write your LORs?
@TwinMom2023 none of my teachers went to UNC I believe haha. Do you think I should apply early action or regular desicion (I’m taking 3 aps and 2 honors classes the first semester of senior year and should get all As)
Whether you apply EA or RD, in the expectation that your GPA will significantly improve after Fall Semester grades come in, is a discussion that you may need to have with your guidance counselor; and sooner rather than later (EA application deadline is October 15).
