My work experience consists of a part time job during the summer of my junior year (this year), and four years as the Marketing Manager to a major magazine in my community.

I have many recomendations from teachers and coaches as well as the principal of my school. I also have a part minority status (1/4 Asian).

Considering all of this, what are my chances (percentage wise) of getting into Washington. Is there anything I can work on or fix to have a better chance of being admitted? I would love to be admitted to this school!!

I would love it if someone or many people would reply to this and be honest please!!

Thank You for responding, i'm out of state, so overall what would you say my chances of getting into Washington would be? Is there anything I can do to increase those chances?

UW seems to put less weight on ECs and more on GPA/SATs than most schools.

It's a little late to save the GPA, seeing as you only have one more grading semester to go through that'll make it on your application. Nonetheless, you'd be wise to do everything you could to get some good grades your senior year. The higher you can get your GPA the better, and they just might take notice of a jump in grades.

The big thing you can do is bump up your test scores. I'm not too acquainted with the new SATs, but I'm betting its not a whole lot tougher to study and prepare for than the old one, and I knew a handful of people who had 100-200 point increases from their junior to senior test scores.

A good essay is probably a must, because you're not getting in on an admission index, and you'll have to do something to counter the low score. This is where your ECs should help, too.

Overall, chances are probably pretty low, but it's not out of the realm of possibility. I'd think of it as reach.

If you have a high enough AI you're pretty much automatically accepted. For in-staters this has been somehwhere in the mid 70's. This is far over what you need to get in, as there were alot of people with an AI under 60 that still made it, they just didn't get accepted quite as fast as the rest. I'm not sure what it is for out of state, if they have one at all. It changes from year to year anyway.

As it is now the AI weights GPA against SAT 3:1. I think they were tweaking the formula this year to weight SATs a little heavier. It may be next year though, can't remember.

Your chances are pretty low. GPA is pretty darn important to the admission officers. You might have a shot if you retake the SATs and score VERY HIGH... although I still thing you would be an underdog even with a high SAT score.

Honestly, given the experience of my son's friend , your chances appear slim but not impossible. My son's friend is a slacker who only got 3.0 GPA taking all the AP courses, etc, but had an above average SAT in the 1400-1500 range ( b4 the new SAT )..while most UW offers came in March/April of 2005, he was waitlisted in May and had to wait until the last week of July to finally get admitted into UW..during the waitlisting period, UW explained that the reason the candidate did not get admitted was the discrepency between the high SAT and the relatively mediocre GPA of 3.0. Unfortunately, the high school did NOT weight its GPA's based upon AP classes taken.

you know what...i had a 3.29, 1260 sat, instate, my ai was like 54. i had lousy EC"s (though i BS'd the list pretty well, hehe), and i still got in....i'm in the class of 09! don't lose hope...it could happen to you. good luck! and feel free to email me at krsp@u.washington.edu if you have any questions!

You have a very very small chance to get in. Unless your course load is extremely impressive. If you were instate this would be an entirely different scenario. That minority status won't help you at all. Apply don't be discouraged by this post but good luck. 5% I've heard of 3.8's and 1300+ old SAT being waitlisted from out of state.

Everyone is right, your chances as an non-resident applicant to UW are quite slim because the state legislature has directed that a particular % of state-residents with specific scores have priority in admission to Washington's universities. Also, as someone else also said, offering yourself as "1/4 Asian" won't be helpful. The UW has probably the highest ratio of Asian-Americans of any major college or university in America, including the California public schools.

LakeWashington, UW has 20%+ asian whereas some of the uc schools have 40%+ asians. I think UW and stanford have the same percentage of asians. I wonder who is going to win the football game when they play....

oneunknown, i don't know where you're getting your information from, but it really isn't quite so hard to get into the UW. You shouldn't tell people they have a "very, very" slim chance of getting in...I had a 3.29 gpa with a mix of honors/AP AND regular classes, a decent assortment of EC's, a 1380 (old) SAT and a few AP scores. Nothing exceptional. But I got in. I never thought I would, but you shouldn't lose hope. JUst do the best you possibly can on assembling your activities list, and writing your essay. That's all you can do.
I had my first day of classes today, btw, and it was so awesome! To all you hopefuls, the best of luck! This school is amazing!

You are not from out of state and have a relatively high SAT score. Also your GPA is higher and i think your classes might have been harder too. I have quite a bit of friends that are going to UW and they are also very excited. I myself chose a different school.

Some advice. Perhaps try the ACT. You do not have to submit the SAT. Write all the essays, even the optional ones. Will you swim at UW? Have you talked t the coach?

Sorry to revive an old thread but should an international with 3.1 GPA even bother applying? U Washington is one of the schools I'd really like to but I think my GPA is going to signifcantly hold me back. I'll be taking the SAT in December. My guestimation is an AI of around 41ish. So, should I give it a shot or am I just deluding myself?

So if you have a really interesting life story and can write a compelling essay, you have a shot. Being an international student also would be a help, I think. Study hard for that SAT and do whatever you can to bring up your GPA, since showing an upward grade trend is always a good thing. Good luck!
