suze, above you said that $$$ plays a mojor role, so would you say that not applying for fa increasing chances dramatically??? do you know the approx. number of students that dont apply for fa and how many of these people get in?? and also you say that asains are an overrepresented minority, do you know approx. what percent of the applicants are asain? and do admission officers care if yor chinese, korean, indian, etc. or do they just consider you in the asain category?? thanx

money plays a role. they dont have enough money to pay for each student and I believe how much FA you need also plays a role. All asians are in one category.. because they're all overrepresented.

I can't answer your specific question eell. While a few schools are need blind, there are many who don't believe they are really so for a number of reasons. Everyone at the top schools seems to agree it's hard to find a white or Asian that is unhooked on significant aid. In this case the hooks are more than usual. Schools give money to local kids for example to bolster town/gown relationships. Then there's a slew of kids from programs like ABC and ABC. And athletes. How much money could be left?

65% pay full tuition. About half of those give on top of tuition. They get the balance the same year after year. How can you do that if you're really not looking at need?

BlairT: as mentioned by suze, you can't determine an applicants chances by their SSAT scores relative to the schools average. If you remove all the hooked applicants and legacies, all the major boarding schools would have SSAT scores in the mid to high 90s.

And as bearcats said, Lawrenceville is certainly not a safety. It's SSATs are slightly lower than some other schools because it recruits significantly more athletes than schools such as AESD. Last year it had an acceptance rate of 21%. Also, unfortionately L'ville does not yet have need-blind admissions, so FA can play a factor.

Cate and Thacher are also harder to get into than their averages would suggest.

in a need blind situation. when they read your app. do they know that you are applying for fa??? and if they do know that you are applying for fa in a need-blind situation do they just not know how much fa you need???

While we're on the subject, it seems to me that the development people at the different schools are more out there then they were in my time. There are special weekends for the biggest givers, wink wink, nudge, nudge how can we make your child happy? There seems to be less pretense, my wealthy friends got special treatment.
