Im planning to apply as a humanities major ( history) next year...probably under the early decision application pool....so what are my chances of getting in???

GPA : 3.6
SAT: 2310
Extra: -I am presently the Editor for advertisements for my school newspaper and also Copy Editor. Next year I will become editor-in-chief of my school newspaper.
-President and Founder of Project Hope (an organization that deals with helping the homeless and the elderly, in which we volunteer at retirement homes and shelters and soup kitchens, and donate money, etc)
- Member of the National Honor Society for Journalism ( Quill and Scroll)
- A Junior Volunteer at the Hospital
- Published a few poems, and won a couple of poem writing contests
- Wrote in my city's newspaper

Im really hoping to major in history, so I took 4 history classes at UCLA, in which all of them I recieved an A. Im well aware of my horrible GPA but Im hoping the my experience in journalism and interest in history will help me get in. What do you think?

but dont you all think my gpa is ...well...really bad....?
and yah...I am still a junior
and my hs doesnt rank...so I have no idea what my rank would be, but if it helps, my high school is a really competitive and quite large as well(close to 4000 students)

don;t wrry ed is really easy to get in, atleast this is what has been happening in my school for the past 4 yrs, so if hopkins is your first choice, there is definetely no harm in completing your app just a few months earlier

Hopkins is also on my list (undergrad: biomedical engineering; grad: medicine) and I was just wondering if the GPA you guys are talking about is weighted or unweighted.

Plus, if it helps you moonbright, Johns Hopkins University Office of Undergraduate Admissions does not look at class rank in high school (you can confirm this by email), whether your school ranks or not.

o gosh!..I just read the average gpa is like 3.86..and that is no where close to my pathetic 3.6....Im just scared the admission committee will disregard my application because of the fact that I only have a 3.6.

Do you think my position of advertisement editor and copy editor (both this year) and editor-in-chief (next yr) will help me; I put in so much time to get all those postitions and I will have to put double that amount of time next year as editor in chief...and I dont know if its worth it if it wont make any difference in my application and plus it wont allow me to be in my school's speech and debate team next year.

I love journalism and all, but will the college recognize that a lot of time goes into this position? --and will this position make me a good canidate for a humanities major ( either english or history)

Also...do you guys recomend me sending with my application a set of poems and essays?

and also my friend was telling me that being editor-in-chief isnt anything great...and I thought it would make me look unique..or at least give my application a hook :-(

Honestly, if you have very solid ECs (as you do) and have a stellar SAT score, it probably would look very good on your college app :) Since you're still a junior, why don't you just work a little more and bring your GPA up to 3.7 or something? I'm sure that'll help.
Beside, if the bad grades are all in freshman year or something, I'm sure you can explain that away with "I was having a tough transition... my cat died..." or something along those lines ;)
Anyhow, good luck next year, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you (actually, no I won't. I need to do Chem HW :) ) Good Luck!
