My Chances (UCs, Colby, Macalester, etc.)

I'm a Hispanic female from California... and I'm wondering what are my chances at a few schools. My SAT scores are definetely well... average, and probably a bit below that but my actual class load, GPA, and all of that is pretty decent.

SAT I: Math (500), Critical Reading (660), Writing (600)
I've taken it twice and the first time these were my scores: Math (550), Critical Reading (650), Writing (590) Unfortunately, I can do Calculus better than I seem to be able do easy math -___- and somehow flopped in that section. I don't know whether I really have any more time to change the scores by retaking it a third time.

SAT II: Taking these in October: Spanish (I expect a high score :P), Literature (Decent at the very least), and Math Level 2 (If I study for a very very long time, I think I could do ok? O_X).

GPA: My current Cumulative GPA is 3.9221 (UW). I believe I'm ranked (currently) 14th out of a class of 76.

EC's:
International Cuisine Organization Member (9,10)
Yearbook (10)
Key Club (Community Service) (9,10)
Junior Classical League Member (10,11,12)
Choir Member (9,10,11,12)
Young Writer's Conference Participant (10,11,12)
--Student of English Studies Associations Award (11)
I can't think of anything else that comes to mind I'm sure there's more award things I can put in for the Classical League stuff. I just can't think of names. Those are the most important ones though I guess.

I've taken AP English Language and Comp. (4) and this year I'm taking AP Calculus BC, AP Gov., and AP Literature. I've taken courses at the University level before, so I get the college credit for that since our high school works in conjunction with the State University our small campus is on. So.. I've gotten college credit which is more or less an "AP" type grading scale for: Spanish 1A and 1B, World History 1, Biology 10, Geography 4 (All Letter Grades of A?). This year I'm taking Spanish 2A, and Geology 1. Overall, my schedule is full and these classes more or less count as what most schools know as "Honors" courses, at least that's what I believe.

I don't know if I need grades or all the classes I've taken or something to help everyone out O_o.. I got a D the first semester of Junior year in Calculus so now I'm taking it over and doing considerably better ^.^ ... will that greatly negatively affect things? As for the schools I'm thinking about..

-Colby College
-Macalester College
-UCLA
-UCSD
-UCD
-UCSB
-CSU Fresno (my safety)

Does anyone have any other schools they might suggest? O_o

The SATs are what's really bringing your chances down.

I think UCLA is a reach simply because of this. The median verbal scores were between 570 - 690 and the median math scores were between 610 - 720.

In regards to your test scores, there are schools that do not require SAT scores to be submitted, they can be found here http://www.fairtest.org/optstate.html.

Best regards to you and your college admissions.

Dietz:

UCLA: Super Reach
UCSD: Reach
UCSB: Slight Reach
UCD: Slight Reach

I don't understand the UC's and don't do chances on them.
For Colby and Mac, however, I think you could consider them reasonable reaches or reachy matches. My son also had issues with SAT I math (670), doing much better on the IIC (750) and pulling a 5/5 on the calc BC. So - work on the IIC as you are planning. My son used the Kaplan book to prep for the IIC and it worked well for him. (Not entirely true - he HATED SAT I math. Nasty stuff.)

Other LAC's you might want to take a peak at: Allegheny, Centre, Skidmore, Bryn Mawr. These a bit less problematic than Mac and Colby, but have many of the same qualities of a bright, enthusiastic and engaged student body.

Yeah. SAT scores are really killing me I know -_- I hope that I do enormously better on my SAT IIs and although that won't make up for it it'll save a bit of face. Anyhoo, thanks for the advice everyone I'll look into the site and those other schools! ^.^

Any other opinions?

Ew. I hate to bump. But I must. I'm also starting to consider Bowdoin, since they don't require me to send in SAT scores. What would be my possible chances there? O_X

We looked at Bowdoin - absolutely wonderful place. Bowdoin is very selective - definately a reach. However, your coursework is pretty significant expect for the oops with calc, and you can offer them ethnic and geographic diversity, and I think you will write good essays. They accept common app + a supplement (last year about the teacher that impacted you the most), so if you are applying to other common app schools, its not that much extra work.

OK Well great thanks so much for your input ohio_mom ^.^! Appreciate it kindly!

As for the UCs, anyone have anything else to say about those. I honestly thought I had a better chance at them than what I've been reading O_O! If I aimed for ones like Irvine or Riverside would I be better off? Or is that better off at all?
