Honestly, Duke is a reach for you. Your SAT scores are at the lower end of the applicant pool, and your GPA is good but not great. The research experience is very interesting, though, so highlighting that might make a stronger app. My best advice is to write an amazing essay- start now and get a teacher or two to read over it. :)

ok thanks, i'm also going to retake my sat 1, i know its been a weak point for me

Hi treblechamps,

Have you thought about taking the ACT? It's a different kind of test than the SAT. I, a prospective Dukie, have had a horrible time with PSAT's and SAT II's in the past; maybe its because of the higher difficulty of questions, but it's most likely the way I perceive it, as a high-pressured, make-or-break type of test that will determine my future. I know that this isn't true, but I believe that subconciously this is what I think, if that makes any sense. I decided to sign up for the ACT because I heard that it was score-choice and tested more concepts that I had learned in the classroom, as opposed to the more conceptual SAT. I was able to relax and ended up scoring much, much higher than my SAT II's and PSAT's (I never actually took the SAT I). Now, all that most colleges have to see is my nice, crisp ACT score; I don't even have to show them my abysmal SAT II's.

Your SAT score is by no means poor; it is just below average for Duke. If you're anything like me, I would highly recommend taking the ACT. What's the most that you can lose?

well my sat score was kind of bizarre for the average i was getting before. i think my nerves got the best of me on the day, but i know during the retake that i can't get any lower, and i'm hoping the pressure will ease.

I don't necessarily agree with the junior-or-senior-year-only teacher recs. Unless you want to get a rec from a teacher you have had for only three months, you are stuck with getting them from junior-year teachers. In my case, I had six teachers last year. I felt that only one really knew me and could actually write about my character. I just didn't feel comfortable with the other teachers, so I got one from a teacher that I had freshman and sophomore years. I feel bad that I broke the rules, but there was nothing really that I could do.

how about a 2130 but 4.0 uw (13 AP classes)
