My Chances?

I am working on the Naval Academy Application, and I was just wondering if I even have a chance this late in the decision process. I have an ACT of 31 and take the SATIIs tomorrow. My class rank is 2/63, and I have an unweighted GPA of 3.91 or so...it should go up quite a bit, as we don't have weighted classes until senior year. I hopefully made all-state choir as well, but haven't found out yet.

I am currently enrolled in:

band/chorus
pre-calc (highest math offered, teaching myself calc)
speech
physics
PE
Spanish IV
College English IV

I have 6 hours of credit for computer concepts and operating system theory.

I plan to major in physics and enter the nuke program upon graduation. My uncle is a Captain and Naval Atache to Tunisia, and he says I have a decent shot.

Last I checked, here are my physical stats (I'm not sure exactly what they want):

63 sit-ups/minute
54 push-ups/minute

215 bench press

Current Leadership Positions

Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, BSA Troop 4315
Reporter, Drama Club
Secretary, Senior Class
Vice President, National Honor Society

Thanks!

By the way, my school really sucks and offers no honors, AP, or IB courses.

Also, my height is 6'2", weight is 180 - 185, have near-perfect vision, and can play the clarinet, saxophone, and am learning trumpet (I want to be in the drum & bugle corps).

A couple of quick thoughts -

First thing to do immediately is check for nominations. Call your Congressmen (House, and Senate) and find out what their deadlines were. You may have passed them. Your application alone won't get you an appointment. If you're eligible for other nominations (JROTC, military) it wasn't obvious from your EC's.

SATII's don't really matter.

Call the USNA admissions office ASAP. You need to get your medical done as well as your physical aptitude test.

Check other threads in this forum for more info.

Finally - if you've missed the deadline and are set on attending, don't give up hope. You can apply from your first year in college.

Good luck.

Nukeman:

Time to go nuke on your application. As Katelewis points out, you may have missed the deadlines for your congressional nominations.

Your profile is certainly strong academically. As prior postings have pointed out, participation on school teams( preferrable at the varsity level) is as important as physical fittness. My quick review of your profile shows great academics, a lot of EC's but limited athletics.

If your primary goal is to get into the nuke program rather than be a naval leader/officer, check out some of the other paths to the nuke program. You need to ask yourself if the USNA nonacademic environment will fit your personality. Only you can determine that.

I have already gotten in for a nomination and interview Dec. 11th.

Also, my school only offers football, basketball, baseball, and track. We are the result of a consolidation, and before consolidating between my sophomore and junior years we only had basketball and baseball.

I really like soccer, climbing, and paddling and will participate in those if I get into the Academy.

Quick question:
Are you taking or plan to take a social studies course this year? Off of the top of my head I thought that 4 years of Social Studies Classes were required (civics, government, US History, etc.) You may have fulfilled this requirement prior to senior year. Just a thought. Check the catalog for specific course requirements.
CM

nukeman, I think you have a good chance. I don't want to say great chance because there are so many others with stats like yours and better who don't receive appointments. I would agree that your academics look fine, but a few varsity letters would have been nice. If you didn't explain the consolidation factor to the Academy on your app before you sent it in, maybe you should write an explanation letter to be attached to your file. Of course, there are no guarantees that the Board will read the letter, but if they consider you a strong candidate, there's a good chance. Your leadership positions don't look exceptionally strong, but they're good. Did you attend Summer Seminar or have you received an invitation to CVW yet? Everything is based on a points system, so do whatever you can to add to your accomplishments.

Is it not true that they love Eagle Scouts?

Sorry I'm posting so much, but I did a pre-lim PAE today and these were my stats:

basketball throw - 70'
long jump - 90"
pull-ups - 15
push-ups - 58
shuttle run - 55 something seconds

Nukeman, You sound like a superstar! Have you contacted the music director at the Academy? My daughter is completing her 12th year in Girl Scouts. She earned her Silver and Gold Award during high school. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the equivalent of Eagle Scout. Good luck on your interview!

Do you really think that I have a decent chance with my limited athletics?

Nukeman -

Great PAE results. Any way you can demonstrate athletic activity outside of school? Sports clubs, intramural activities, etc?

Not as big a deal for the Navy as for USMA, but it would still help.

...your hs prep should include: 4 yrs math, 1 yr chem, 4 yrs english
...to further enhance competitiveness, the following courses are also recommended: at least 2 yrs foreign lang, 1 yr physics, computer skills, and 1 full year US History, and where possible, a full year of European or World History

sempergumby, add Pre-Calc/Calc to the list.

nukeman, your PAE results look great! If you total all the events, you have a score of 288. The closer to 300 you can get, the better you look! Relax, you're doing everything you can.

navgirl
yes, that was included in the four years of math-geometry, alg, trig... precalc/calc valuable and encouraged

okay...so I've had four years of Spanish, four of English, and four of math (the highest I can take is pre-calc). We are only offered one year each of physics and chemistry, and I could not take world history due to scheduling conflicts in my small school. Thanks guys and girls!

PS...Navgirl, did you get into Harvard?

No, I understand we won't find out until 5:00 p.m. or after on the 14th. Gotta make it through another weekend. :-(

What's with the 300? Isn't 125 the minimum?
