I am a junior in Brooklyn Technical High School located in New York and I am worried about my chances of getting into Binghamton.

My weighted transcript grade is 91.79
I am a strong mathematics person, I want to aim for the mathematics major or Accounting major.

I have taken honors Trigonometry, AP Spanish, AP Calculus BC and next year for Senior year I am planning on taking AP Statistics, AP Economics, AP Physics C and Multivariable Calculus.

I have taken the SATs once and plan to take it 2 more times because I am very disappointed with the score I got.
Math: 760
Reading: 550
Writing: 670

I have been practicing on my reading and planning on only focusing on reading for the next two tests.
I have not taken SAT IIs yet but I plan to take Math 2 and US History.

I don't have very strong extracurricular activities.
Throughout the 3 years I've been in high school, I have participated in the Math Team being captain of an official team in freshman year and being on the official team in the junior year.
I have written 2 math papers, participated in the math fair and received 2 medals- silver in sophmore year, and gold in junior year.
I have been in Key Club and I plan to join BETA/NHS next year.

What are my chances?
Very worried ):

Your reading SAT score is going to hurt you, because Binghamton doesn’t look at writing so that won’t make up for it. Luckily you still have time. If you can raise it to, ideally, around 650 then you should be perfect but hitting 600 will help a lot. Doing well on a non-math subject test will probably also help. US History is good, Literature would be another good idea, etc.

I’m honestly not really sure what your chances are because obviously you’re a very strong candidate for math but your GPA is a tiny bit low. I think if you can bring up reading you’ll stand a decent chance, especially if your essay and recs are killer.

Take the ACT if you can and see how that goes for you. I think if you have a solid essay and apply early action, you should have a decent chance. Sat IIs are just icing on the cake. I know plenty of people that didn’t even take them

Definitely consider doing early action (it’s not binding, and you hear back in February)

Honestly, I did not even think about taking the ACTs but I don’t know if I still have time now. I have not looked at the test at all, nor have I looked at when they can be taken. I have been a little careless and only took 1 SAT in my junior year. I plan to take 2 more in my Senior year, last minute- 1 in October and 1 in December and 2 SAT II in November. I don’t think I have time to fit an ACT.
I don’t think I can raise my GPA any higher than it can be by much since I only have one more marking period to go and someone told me Senior year won’t count but colleges do look at it.
I have confidence that I can raise my reading to around 600 though.

Also, what are the advantages of early action?

I believe the ACT is usually different weekends from the SATs. Take it once, it can’t hurt. Who knows, maybe you’ll do much better. Some people do better on the ACT than SAT test, and vice versa. It’s just a different type of thing. And you don’t need to study for it like the SATs. It’s more straight forward than the SATs are.

I agree that you should take the ACTs. You should be able to take the ACTs before the school year is out. Then take them again in the fall.

Take both the ACTs and the SATs as many times as you can until you get a score that works. You need a good score on one to offset your GPA.

Your GPA is tough to change at this point.

Work on what you can change – your standardized tests. All you need is a good day on these tests and your chances will improve markedly.

Forget the SAT IIs. You got your APs. SAT IIs are redundant.

Now go get some extracurriculars this summer and in the fall of your senior year that you (1) enjoy and (2) shows that you are more than a science, math whiz kid. Get a leadership role in something if you can.

I know it’s not that necessary to take SAT II for Binghamton but that’s not the only college I’m applying to. I believe some colleges require SAT IIs and I don’t want to miss out on even a chance to apply just because I didn’t take the tests.

I have been talking to some of my Senior friends who got into Binghamton. They say that it’s not that hard to get in- apparently their grades were a little lower than mine but they had higher SAT scores, which I can most likely fix.

Anecdotal information from friends is one thing, but I hope you have backed their opinions up with a visit to your guidance counselor.

Double check to make sure the schools you are interested in require SATS IIs. There are not that many that do.

I would estimate your chances as very good. You can strengthen your application by bringing the CR SAT score up to 600 but a sub-500 score is not fatal with a M score of 760 and your stating interest in studying math or accounting. Your credentials exceed that of most of the students in my area who have been accepted by Binghamton during the past 2,3 years.
