Really nice EC's there. The grades are so-so at first, but in the context of your school, it looks like they are actually near top of the class. It all depends on the essays you write now.

Hey deloren986, what high school do you go to? I was at all the same tournaments as you--CFLs, Harvard, Blue Key. What event do you do? Maybe we have competed against each other...

Statistically, URMs (underrepresented minorities--i.e. blacks, native americans, hispanics) with anything above 1300 have good chances at elite schools such as Brown. An asian or whitey with a 1300 wouldn't stand a damn chance, though; it's because these URMs score so poorly on SAT's on average, so 1300 to a black guy is like a 1500 to a white guy in the eyes of adcoms.

Are you that easily offended, starry? It's just truth.

It's the truth and it makes me mad. Everyone should have the same opportunity. Just as stupid white people shouldn't go to good schools (can't handle work load) neither should stupid black people. Not saying that 1300s are bad, but if it's viewed as a 1500 then screw this system.

Deloren986, what was your oratory about at Harvard last year? I did "The Revolution Continues..." about political apathy. I made it to semifinals there. Maybe you heard it. By the way, I'm from Nova. I'm sure you know some of our debaters.

Scherzo123, just so you know affirmative action is supposed to account for certain minorities' lack of opportunities that most often manifest themselves with lower stats that make it very difficult to be competitive in the college admissions process. And URM students, although they may have lower stats to begin with, often "catches up" with the rest of their class, graduating and doing just as well their white and Asian peers at elite colleges. Affirmative action brings neglected groups of people into the elite school fold--one that was once reserved only for rich white men--and brings those students up to its stringent academic standards. In short, the URM benefits and the school is not harmed, it benefits as well. It is interesting that you did not mention legacy or athletic recruiting--typical of the conservative dogma that strives not to decrease socio-economic disparity but to increase it. By the way, white women have been the greatest beneficiaries of affirmative action. Surely you'll reconsider your arrogant and poorly formulated opinions.

rjsmith1031 you state some facts that have no proof to back you up. Can you state an official census that proved that URMs with lower tests scores did just as well if not better than their asian or white counterparts in elite schools? Maybe a list of these schools, list of student stats before college, list of student stats in college, and list of their peers' stats would be hepful. It is plain and simple, the most qualified people should make it into the best schools. It should not matter if you play sports, if you are an URM, if you are a legacy, or whatever. Most of these people are going to be performing services for me and other people I love one day (i.e. physician) and I do not want a doctor who only got into med school because he was black. Now if you want an example of this I will give you one. My father taught at one of the elite med schools within the past 15 years and he had a problem with 3 URM students. He caught them with a stolen copy of the exam studying in a library before finals. He then took the exam and reported these three students to the appropriate dean. The dean proceeded to tell him if he failed these students he would lose his job. So he failed them, and quit. Colleges and liberals alike think the whole affirmative action thing is fair. Quite honestly, I do not owe anyone anything and neither does this country. Just because you are a specific color or had slavery in your background does not entitle you to an easier shot into college. It has been over 100 years since the civil war ended and 30 since the civil rights actions of the 70s. Since that time the whole world has developed exponentially and advanced more than anyone ever imagined. Why can't these URMs do the same thing and actually make grades and scores that are comparable to others instead of being satisfied and congratulated for poor results.

Although the world has improved a lot since the civil rights movement, I think it's been proven that having money increases, for one thing, the chance of doing well on the SATs. Also, growing up in a family with high educational values will help. It is also well known that many of the ghettos of cities where people aren't affluent or well off or don't have time to check if their kids are studying contain large populations of URMs. I don't think it's right to particularly target minorities. I mean, I live in the poorest county in my state and the only minorities at my school are Asians. So give the white farms kids a break too.

One more thing, rj's statement "By the way, white women have been the greatest beneficiaries of affirmative action," is also false. The order of benefits is as follows: Minority female, black male, white female, and white male. How do I know this? Apply for a SubWay franchise and see how much you have to pay for one when you are a white male or female. My dad was going to open one up for me to learn business in as a gift one summer. That list of beneficiaries was also the one my father told me about med school.

Anyone in this country can do as well as they wish; it only requires one thing: dedication. Some people have better opportunities than others and this will never stop as it shouldn't, people get out of the economy what they put in. If you go to school longer and you work harder you get more money (with the obvious exception of professional sports). Anyone with dedication can take advantage of the public school system and public libraries. My school is one of the most elite public schools in the country. Half of the people that go here are URMs who lived in horrible conditions back home. How did they get here? They worked hard in public school, went to libraries, and took advantage of the other opportunities our government has given them. Is it hard to do this? Sure it is, but instead of complaining about its difficulty why don't people start trying to better themselves.

tpicou: If you think all you need to succeed in white supremacist, sexist, homophobic America is dedication, you are just as delusional as Nazis who deny the Holocaust. This imagining away of our country's social problems should not be acceptable anywhere in our society, let alone the lecture halls of one of our nation's greatest universities. I hope you recognize this soon.
