My Chances?

Hey everyone.

Occidental College is one of my top college choices. I particularly like it's location and strong programs in english, writing, and the like.

Though I would really love to go to Occidental, my application may not be so great...I have about a 3.3 GPA, but my average of all my grades per semester is about an 87%, with particular strength in spanish, literature, and history. Classes like math and science are what bring my grades down. Below is my unimpressive and concise list of ECs and the like:

-Taken art for (expected) all 4 years of high school
-National Art Honor Society (11 12 planned)
-Teen Art Club (outside of school) (11 12 planned)
-Took a Japanese language class at community college (10)
-President of class (9)
-National Junior Honor Society (9, but was in it from grades 7-9)
-Art of Summer workshop. I worked to produce an exhibition of my own art in a summer art show. Outside of school. (9 10)
-Study abroad in Japan for the summer (11)
-Held a job (11)

As you can see, I'm hoping Occidental notices my high interest in languages and international studies (due to the Japanese language study and summer abroad) and the commitment to fine arts.

I can write a truly excellent essay, and will most likely recieve pretty good reccommendations from teachers. I'm scheduled to take the SAT in March, and I'm aiming for a score in the 2100-2200 range (a score I will most likely attain.)

...What do you think my chances are?

Ya i hope you get in, but you really need to do well on your SAT. I got in with a low ACT score, 23, but with a 3.96 GPA. If you get in though, I hope you have enough money to pay for the college because it is very expensive and they can't give alot.

Oxy is getting more competitive every year. You will have to do well on standardized tests in order to have a reasonable chance of admission. I'm not sure how you can be so confident about a high SAT score when you have a problem with math. You need to do well in math on the SAT to demonstrate competence in that subject if your math grades are a problem. Doing well on SAT 2 tests will also bolster your chances. Have you taken AP classes? Is your GPA weighted or unweighted? If it is unweighted, then you should indicate it when inquiring about chances.

i wish you the best of luck but work on ur SAT score, get good recs, and write an essay that's "you"

good luck!

My HS only offers about 4 or 5 AP classes; AP British Literature, AP Spanish, AP US History, AP Calculus, AP Biology. It also has Advanced Chemistry and Advanced Physics, but these are not AP courses. However, I've heard you can take them and easily do well on the chem and physics AP exams.

ANYWAY, I only plan to take AP British Literature and AP Spanish, perhaps AP US History. My school is a college prep private school though, so even non-AP classes are rigorous.

I believe myself to be an excellent writer, so I can imagine getting scores such as the following on the SAT: 750 W, 700 V, and maybe 600 M. Those are predictions, obviously, but I have been studying very hard for the SAT, particularly the mathematics section.

I will also take the ACT though, and maybe some SAT IIs.

I would not worry about SAT IIs, but rather concentrate on the ACT because people who write well tend to score higher than on the SAT.
