I'm a junior and I'm planning to apply mostly to combined/direct med programs. Here are some stats:

GPA (all unweighted):
Freshman year: 96
Sopohomore year: 96
Junior year: 99
(We don't have the 4.0 scale, we use the 100 scale)
My school doesn't rank but I know i'm either 1 or 2 out of 70

My school doesn't offer any APs except for AP Calc AB which I will take Senior year. I go to a carrer type magnet school (for medical sciences) and all our classes are considered honors. We don't have different levels of classes like in normal high schools. Therefore we don't have weighted GPAs.

I have some college credits: gen chem 1 (5 cred), speech (3 credits), anatomy and physiology I and II (10 total), and I will get general bio 1 credits senior year (5 credits) plus AP Calc (taking AB and thinking about self studying BC)

SAT I: 1520 (760M 760V) on old sat. Shooting for 2300 on new sat
SAT IIs: still have to take but taking chem, bio, and math 2c (will take writing on new sat)
PSATs: 204 (63V 70M 71W) if it matters

ECs:
Executive Board of Math League (leadership)
Chief photographer and writer for newspaper (leadership)
Witness and alternate attorney for mock trial
NHS
Will be in World Language Honors Society (admission only in senior year)
Member of NJSYO orchestra, play 1st violin (3rd chair)
"Varsity" member of HS tennis team (technically I'm JV but its officially known as varsity on the certificate. There is no JV tennis league in my hs league)
Volunteered at hospital in Hematology and Radiology
Will probably attend NJ governor's school in sciences this summer (application at final stage. This is a research project also)
Math student of the month 10th and 11th grade
character student of the month 10th grade

I know the ecs are a little shoddy but i'm workin on them this year and will try to cram a lot in the summer. I'm planning to apply to BU 7 year med, TCNJ-UMDNJ 7 and 8 year, Rutgers 8 year med, GW 8 year med, Rochester 8 year med and a couple other direct meds. Any feedback welcome.

I think you have a good chance at all those schools. Your SAT is great and don't worry about not having many AP's, colleges consider the fact that thats all your school offers. Good Luck

probably BU, Rochester, Drexel, TCNJ, Brown, Duke, GW. I'm applying only to the 7 year med or 8 year med programs at these schools (i'm not sure whether Duke has a direct med prog tho). Heck I'll throw in an application for Harvard just to see whether I'd get in.

Your EC's are semi-strong, but consider not including some of the less "distinguished" EC's you listed; adcoms won't appreciate "EC-bloating", IMHO.

You have a chance at all those schools. But, especially at Duke and Harvard, what distinguishes you from the rest (besides your 1520 SAT)?

Direct med programs are super competitive but your sat score should get you through the main door. I don't think Duke has a direct med program. You should look at Rice; they have the best direct med program in my opinion. The key to success in the admission process is having solid reasons for why you want to become a doctor. Getting the necessary scores, appealing transcript and EC's is the easy part; the interview is the real distinguisher.

how much will research experience help on the apps. I will most probably attend governor's school in science this summer (I'm at the final stage now) but if I don't get accepted, I have a backup with a parents friend who is a heart surgeon. I will shadow him and help in whatever research he is doing.

well regular volunteering is easy. All you have to do call the hospital and ask to speak to the volunteering department. But if you're asking for research volunteering (with a scientist or doctor) I don't think there is a formalized process. You just have to call up some doctors and see whether they'll take you on. I was personally lucky because one of my parents friend is a heart surgeon and he gladly said yes when I asked him if I could research/shadow with him.

I would say Rice is better. I would give it and NU a shot. Not only are they the best, they offer the best overall experience (ie you get to go to Rice or NU!!!, awesome college experiences) Brown is the odd ball, it has the best undergrad of all of these by far, but the med school isnt as good as NU/ Baylor. You will get into some of these programs so dont worry about that (Drexel, etc are locks)
