My chances ..?

Hi, I just registered here today. I have been checking out these forums for some advice on colleges and tests, but never felt the need to make an account.

My senior year is coming up and I am determined to do well to raise my chances a little. My grades are probably just average and my SAT score was not exceptional.

I will post all the information I can about my grades and myself.

I am not too familiar with how to calculate GPA(weighted? unweighted?) because of honors points, so I will be putting down what I see on my transcript.

Please note: My highschool gives 7 additional points for honors classes and AP classes. So if I receive an 80 in let's say honors lit, on my transcript, it'll say 87.

I will also admit ahead of time that I am not a very strong math student.
I will list the grades I got for both semesters.
The list of schools I'm interested in will be at the very bottom of this post.

High School Math Courses:

Algebra 1 Honors - 92, 90
Geometry Honors- 96, 102
Algebra II Honors - 95, 94
Pre-Cal Honors - 84, 85
AP Calculus AB -80, 92
Senior Year I will be taking AP Statistics and I will be expecting an A without honors points in this class.

9th Grade Lit/Comp Honors - 99, 100
10th GRade Lit/Comp Honors - 99, 92
11th Grade American Lit/Comp Honors - 98, 100
Senior Year I will be taking College English. It is considered an honors class so I get the +7 points and I have heard it is very easy. I also expect an A without the honors points in this class.

High School Science Courses:

Biology Honors - 97, 98
Chemistry Honors - 104, 102
AP Chemistry - 86, 92
Senior Year I am planning on taking AP Biology. I am good with classes that require reading and memorizing a lot so I expect an low A without honors points. I am also taking AP Physics. I expect a mid-high B or low A without honors points in this class.

High School Social Studies/History Courses:

Political Science (1 semester) - 92
AP World History - 90, 92
AP US History - 91, 97

Chamber Orchestra - 100, 99, 98, 100, 100 ,100
I will also be expecting very high A's or 100's in senior year. This is our school's highest level orchestra if that matters. We have been to Midwest Festival and traveled to Austria for Mozarts anniversary.

PSAT
Freshmen year - 180ish (Sorry I can't remember exact, but it's about right)

AP US History - 5

SAT:
First time -

Writing 680
Total: 2030

Second Time
Critical Reading 600
Math 710
Writing 620
Total 1930

I know my score dropped T_T
I am planning to take it again in October. I know I can at least get a 2100. I regret not preparing a harder when I took it the second time. I was a little over confident.

SAT II's:
Chinese - 780
Chemistry - 720
US History - 710
I am debating whether or not to take the harder sat II math and sat II biology.

Class Rank

The only time my counselor told me my classrank was after first semester of junior year, which I really screwed up. I was ranked at 108/624, which is around the 17.3% area. I believe my somewhat better grades during second semester pulled me up a bit in class ranks and my realistic high school goal will be top 15%.

Now time for some more information about me =D

Senior Schedule:
Chamber Orchestra
AP Physics B
AP Biology
AP Stat
AP Econ Macro + Micro
College English

There's all my high school grades up till now. I am very confident in the classes that I will be taking senior year. I am in and participate clubs such as Beta club, National Honor Society, and Habitat For Humanity. I have done a wide range of volunteer work such as just normal work in a local library to volunteering in the lab of Toronto's Brain and Behavior research chair.

I have also been to various summer camps in China. One of them was for the HSK test and we went to Nanjing Normal University and learned chinese and chinese culture. We also traveled to various places. Another is the chinese root seeking camp. We traveled to a region in china and visited all the attractions and learned about the history.

I have played rec league baseball for many years. And I have also got selected for the All-star team for every season it was available.

I have also graduated from chinese school, which consists of 12 grades.

I am also playing basketball with a team put together by the community with a coach. We play once a week. I also do the same with volleyball. And I used to do soccer. My teammates have been the same people since we were around 5 years old and we have learned great teamwork.

A few of my teammates and I also coach a group of children aged around 6-9 baseball. We also help coach the same team of children basketball, but we are more of the assistant coaches for that.

I also work in a new Bakery that opened in a H-mart near my home. Hmart is some huge korean super market if you don't know. The bakery is called Tous Les Jours, and its owned by CJ, some huge korean food/entertainment company.

I live in Georgia and go to Northview High School which is one of the best public highschools in Georgia.

I was born in Canada, so I am a Canadian citizen.

I put down as much information that came to my mind. I tried to format it so it was easy to read and would be easier for you guys.

I am planning on applying to these universities:

University of Georgia, UGA
Georgia Tech
Emory
University of Chicago
New York University
University of Toronto
and possibly 1 or 2 more. Any suggestions? =)

So what are my chances? Am I aiming a little too high?

Thank you in advance for your opinions and great wisdom <3

I will also update this thread when I get new information.

It seems like I can't edit my main post again, or maybe I just forgot where the edit button was.

But, I want to mention that I plan on early actioning UGA

University of Georgia, UGA - safe match
Georgia Tech - match
Emory - low reach
University of Chicago - reach
New York University - low reach
University of Toronto - match
Your grades aren't terrible but your SAT scores aren't too hot.. I guess your ECs are pretty good, but you'll probably easily get in to UGA and GT because of in-state status.

PS. that format is a bit hard to read because you didn't calculate your GPA hahaha.

I wasn't really sure how to calculate my gpa since there's honors/ap points and stuff. T_T

Is weighted with the extra 7 points? what about the +0.5 on gpa of ap courses?
and unweighted is just without the 7 points and +0.5?

And also, can someone clarify what reach/match and ect means? I'm new to this ^_^;

Weighted, in GPA format, is usually a +1 GPA for AP and honors.

Reach - College you probably won't get into, but have a chance at
Match - You probably will get in with all luck, have a good chance
Safety - You WILL get in.

EC - extra-curricular

My unweighted GPA is around 3.47 with ALL classes

My unweighted GPA is around 3.32 without classes like health, personal fitness, orchestra

My weighted GPA is around 3.91 with ALL classes and +7 points in honors/AP

My weighted GPA is around 3.88 without classes like health personal fitness and orchestra, but with the +7 points in all honors/ap academic classes

I consider math, socialstudies/history, literature, science, and foreign language academic classes.

I realize the major difference between my weighted and unweighted. I think i should be able to pull my unweighted to a 3.5-3.6 with the senior schedule that I have. I find it rigorous, but also classes where my strengths lie.

I also hope to pull my weighted up to the 4.0 mark.

I hope this extra information is useful =)

It's interesting but none of my predictions changed because of that GPA.

People assume that having less than a 4.0 weighted GPA is horrible, but in your case I don't think that's too bad.

I'm also thinking about Johns Hopkins. and thanks cbpeanut for your predictions xD

And I'm also planning on taking the ACT in october

Sorry for double posting and everything =(

I've been looking around and I see people with over 4.0 unweighted GPA, how is that possible? Am I calculating my GPA wrong? Maybe it's just different ways of calculating.

Toronto is a reach because of your GPA and test scores. Because that's basically all they will look at.

Hopkins would also be a reach.

Theoretically, you shouldn't be able to have a 4.0+uw gpa, but that's where extra credit and grade inflation comes in.

But your school with its 7 point rule also has grade inflation...

I thought weighted meant with the grade inflation and unweighted is without.

And I forgot to mention that my dad went to Toronto, will that increase my chances?

A nice little bump before I go out for the day. Keep bringing in the advice, predictions, and criticism please.

Thanks

you have some nice classes, but some grades are pretty low. it's okay though. i'm sure all your colleges are good matches. but i dont quite know about toronto university so i cant give you much opinion on that
