My Chances

I know you folks probablly get a lot of questions like this, but I thought I would throw it out there for you anyway.

I am a high school senior (male) living in Cambodia. My family (I am the eldest of nine), moved here in 2003 and are doing missions work with out Anglican church here. Thus, my entire high school career has been here in Cambodia. Though I have gone back for the past three summers to do work (landscaping and construction). I speak the language here and attend an International School. However, being in Cambodia, I really just dont have some of the opportunities that I would have if I was in the State's. Not nearly as many EC's or Sports to choose from, and until this year, no AP classes either.

I start on my school basketball, volleyball, and soccer. I also recently became manager of a floor hockey team that I helped create two years ago. My brother and I are the only teenagers on the team, everyone else is in their 20s or 30s (mostly Canadians :) We are the only team in the country, and travel to a big tournament in May to compete. We play year round, twice a week for two hours each time.

My GPA is a 3.96, and I am first in my class (granted there are less than 20 kids). I am taking AP Calculus, AP English, Brit Lit Honors, Physics, Khmer (the language here), P.E., and Church History.

Classes from previous yaers include Honors English (two years previous), Chemistry, Advanced Math, Biology, ect...

ECs include: creating my own service-organization complete with fund-raising done in the States. I can give more info on this if anyone wants it. I was also part of my school's first-ever Student Council last year. Editor of school yearbook two years ago and Editor of school publication last year. I coached the middle school bosy basketball team ("B"team) last year with another highschool teammate.

My SAT scores are

Verbal: 800 Math: 680 Writing: 740 (I took the test twice, both times as a Junior)

My scores for the CFA are high, and with the workout program I have I will probablly be able to get full scores on pull-ups, sit-ups, push-ups, and the mile run...Im not sure about the basketball throw or shuttle since I really dont know a way to train for them.

I will be flying back to Colorado in November for two weeks for nomination interviews, as well as my CFA, and my Medical Exam. I wear glasses but as far as I know I am really healthy and shouldnt need a remidiel for anything else.

Well, I have been writing for awhile, so I will shut up. I can expand on anything. I am mostly worried about my lack of ECs do to inavailability...will it hurt me? I have tried to make up for it (creating the service organization, ect..)

jpr

I wouldn't lose a bit of sleep about your lack of EC's; you are obviously very active, you'd lived and from your description, thrived in Cambodia, in itself a significant "EC", learned the language and on top of all that received a perfect score on your math SAT…and you may max out the CFA…you seem about a qualified to me as most any candidate I’ve had the pleasure of speaking to. Assuming to don’t run into any issues with a nomination or your medical stuff, you should be a very competitive candidate. Good Luck

Thanks rjrz,

Looking at my post I see a little confusion with the SAT scores.

Verbal: 800
Math: 680
Writing: 740

so I actually have a 680 in math (though I wish it were the other way around).

That's encouraging news about the ECs, I thought living here in Cambodia in a totally different Third World culture might count for something.

MY confusion alone...serves my right for logging in before my morning coffee...bottom line is you have a 2220 on your SAT, combined with the entirety of your life experiences it doesn't change my opinion of the strength of your candidacy. Good luck and try to have fun along the way.

Agree fully with rjr. You appear to be a strong candidate. Good luck. Hope to see you on the Yard come '08.
