My chances?

I will be a senior in high school and I plan to apply to the Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR) school at Cornell.

I am Hispanic. I have a 4.23 weighted GPA and a 3.86 unweighted. My SAT's aren't great (1970), and my ACT is 29. My SAT II's: Math II(790) and US History(660). I plan on retaking the SAT reasoning, the ACT, and the US History exam. I am in the top 10% in my class.

ACT
Composite 29
English 29
Math 35
Reading 28
Science 25 :(
and Writing I got a 9 on the essay, 28 as the score

In terms of extracurriculars, I have been playing football for 4 years, with 2 years on varsity. Our varsity team had the highest average GPA in our section and I won the Most Academic Award (for highest GPA) on that team in 2007. I am also a sectional scholar athlete and have earned my academic letter. I also played Freshman Basketball.

I have over 250 hours of community service. I volunteer weekly at my local hospital and have amassed over 150 hours there. This past summer I have been helping register voters and other volunteer work for Barack Obama's campaign. I also do other random volunteer work with the football team and with some clubs at school.

In addition, I was a baseball umpire for a youth league for 2 years. I was also a private tutor for two years, tutoring elementary/middle school kids in math. I was also a videographer for the local youth football league(for 3 years), and taped every film of every squad's game. I also was an assistant coach for one of the squads of that organization for a year.

Also, I was in a summer program for gifted high school students at UC Berkeley for four years. There I took challenging courses that I got credit for.
In school, other than football, I am a member of the MUN club and the Spanish club. I have been in the California Scholarship Foundation for 7 semesters and have won numerous school and MUN awards. I plan on starting a couple of poltical-based clubs next year.

AP Scores(so far)
5 in US History
4 in Biology
4 in European History
I will have taken a total of 8 weighted courses(with 7 AP's) by the time of my senior year.

How am I looking?

Being Hispanic is a plus because you are a URM. Your GPA is good, and so is your Math SAT II. Your SAT and ACT scores are a little low. If you study before you retake them, you could hopefully boost them to a 2100 or 32 +.

Doing football for four years is good, but I doubt you'll get to mention the average GPA unless it is in your essay. Since you only played basketball for one year, I'd focus more on your football.

Your community service looks good, you will probably need to focus on a few but in-depth volunteer jobs you worked at. You should also mention the summer course at Berkeley (which I assume you'll be applying to as well).

Eight AP classes (probably all within your Junior year) shows that you are willing to take harder coursework. Overall, if you improve your SAT/ACT scores and talk about several EC's that you have done for a while and are passionate about, you will stand a good chance.

Cool. Thanks a lot. Does anyone know if ILR is a difficult school to get into?
BTW I will be applying to Berkeley.

Bump?????????

you said you already have college credit for that UC Berkeley summer program...one thing to warn you about is that ILR does not take any college credit you earned while in high school (even summer credit)...

not sure if cornell does either :<

You're right. Cornell does not accept credits earned in high school except AP, IB, and A-levels (or whatever they're called in U.K.

Ok. That's fine. I have/will have plenty of AP exams.

Why are you interested in ILR?

I am extremely interested in the social sciences, and I would like to go into some type of government/political type profession. I remember I got some literature on the school about a year ago and thought that this was perfect for me. There's Public Policy, some Economics, Human Resources, which is an accumulation of exactly what I want to major in and pursue a career in. I also am planning on going to law school, and 30% of ILR undergrads go to law school.

Cool. Sounds swell.

I took statistics in HS from a local college and did not use it to fulfill any HS requirements. Cornell/CALS gave me the credits.

Now I just need to get in.
haha

I think you have a great chance, and as far as I know, ILR isn't as hard a school to get into as some of the other ones at cornell. You did a great job explaining why you want to go there, and if you can write your application essay in the same way I'm sure you'll get in :-)

Great. Thanks for the advice!

Yeah, if your college credit did not go toward HS graduation requirements (and was taken with real college students on a college campus) it can transfer. If the classes were used to fulfill requirements for your HS diploma they will not.

Now, do you guys think I should apply Regular Admission or Early Decision? Or is my profile not good enough to be in the top-tier of students who do apply early? Be honest please.
