My school started the IB program this year. Out of 50 or so kids who were interested in IB, I'm among the few that actually chose to take some IB classes. Also, I plan on taking the AP exams for all the AP classes that I will take.

Schools interested in: George Washington University, Penn State, and UMKC

So, what do you think my chances are of getting into any of these programs?

No way we can answer this without knowing your GPA (or rank). What is it? Also, hospital volunteering is good, but for those programs (at least UKMC and Penn State…I don’t know anything about GWU’s program) you need more medical EC. Try adding shadowing and research to your EC. Your non-medical EC lack substance, but I had a classmate in HS who got into Penn State with pretty weak non-medical EC (but his medical EC were good).

hey, not to discourage you or anything, but I think you can rule out GWU if you intend on applying to the 7 year GW/GW program (the SBU/GW program is a different case)

As for your other schools, I know Penn State is extremely difficult to get into; UMKC you have a chance, no doubt

You never know what the admissions council is looking for year-to-year. A lot of it depends on how you do in your personaly essays/interview as well.

Pour your heart and soul into your application and just apply wherever you feel like you would be a good fit or to whatever program appeals to you. My advice would be to just go for it and see what happens. Afterall, the only thing you really have to lose is the application fee which isn’t that bad in the grand scheme of things.

Your ACT and rank needs to improve in general for BS/MD. I do not know requirements of specific programs. I would clean up EC’s list, leave only important.

MiamiDAP, could you please elaborate on cleaning up the EC’s list. With the exception of being a member of NSHSS, everything seems o.k. to me considering that I have leadership positions in each of those activities. I appreciate the input.

I agree with what d3silicious said, research the school carefully and pour a whole bunch of trash that the admissions is looking for into the application and apply to any program you have a chance of getting into. If you’re sure you interested in medicine, I advise you to apply to as many programs as you can, ten is a good number. It’s just a matter of time, application fees, and effort that can get you guaranteed into medical school from now on.
