so what are my chances at duke and carnigie mellon? ( for engineering)

indian female
( i have posted the same thing at 'what are my chances')

24 math credits from a near by university

So what are my chances??

i am from a very very very competitive school
people breathe SAT words!

your ecs and SAT scores are a bit low. Also, I dont see any volunteering activities, which is very helpful but not necessary.

duke is a bit of a reach. improving your test scores would help alot, for both schools.

i do have about 400 hours of hospital volunteering....that should help right?
and about 30hrs from the rehab center...

do you think that will cover for 'vounteering'?
alsp project lead is 'community service' club
i am the treasurer this year.......will be the VP next year...

so is that 430 in total? Yeah those hours will help your chances.

it's too bad that they took analogies and sentence completions off the sat then, isn't it?

and how far are you in math with 24 hours...?

You need to boost your Writing and CR portion of the SAT quite a bit.

i am taking calc BC next year at school
the math credits are just extra credits like stats, graph theory, linear programming....i get university credit however

i HAVE to take the SAT IIs again right?

yeah......i am working towards 'atleast a 2100'

Taking a premed track all that hospital volunteering would show alot of focus...of course, are you maybe thinking of BME?

Needless to say, I think if you boost those CR/Writing scores you stand a great shot. Hardest courseload, good EC's, credit from a college. If you're doing the engineering thing your math scores are great, and you're a female which is always hard to come by in engineering. Duke's really looking to boost their engineering program, and your math knowledge seems to be quite substantial.

Good Luck:)

....weeell, you could stand to improve all of your II scores, and you need to perform better on your SATIs. other than that, you look like a pretty well-rounded individual. make sure that your essays are awesome!

You could try the ACT... especially if you're good at working fast.

for someone who has pretty much NO IDEA what the ACT entails.....gimme the 411. what topics does it cover? how is it more difficult/less difficult than the SAT?

its not much different than the SAT other than the science section.

so it is the same question and answer style, with the same penalty for guessing, I assume?

I are no penalties in the ACT.

ACT was much easier than the SAT in my opinion. There was less time, but the material was simple. SAT was.....meh....

Yeah ACT has no penalties, so if you do not finish all of the problems, just guess.

I took both... (1570 SAT 35 ACT)

My thoughts:
the ACT more about being able to work fast (especially science section - definately take a practice test first)

The reading comprehension is much easier than what it was on the SAT, the English isn't hard if you read a lot (but if you have bad english it can really screw you), the Math was harder than the SAT math (includes trig) but is still easily doable, you just have to work fairly fast, the science is really easy but i always ran out of time (i would have had a 36 if not for science).

So basically, my advice is to try an ACT practice test and see how you do - it can't hurt, and if you do well they dont' require SAT 2's.

Yeah ACT requires time management. You will be surprised how fast time flies.

English was the easiest section on the test for me. I flew through it with time to spare.

Math, I actually thought the Math section of the ACT was easier than the Math section of the SAT, Azmodan. Oh well "to each is his own".

Reading is simple, but it is boring......Make sure you outline or search for the answer. There really is no need to read the entire passage. By the way, the passages are looooong. Stay focused.

Science, well the science is practically Reading all over again with just science concepts in my opinion. This was the hardest section for me to get through, because I was growing angsty and annoyed. It is easy as long as you are not distracted or annoyed. I also ran out of time...

I took it once, mind you (December test). I think I would have done even better if I took it again.
