My chances?

Hello i am in the class of 2011 and have been looking into some colleges.

To start I have:

3.58 GPA 4.18 weighted GPA
Take numerous AP classes
1900 sat score (trying to get it to 2000 by June)
100 hours of community service
Participate in 2 sports (soccer, tennis)
Participate in 2 clubs

I was wondering what my chances are for the following colleges:

Miami Univ.
Michigan
Duke
Georgetown
George Washington Univ.
Rochester
Rochester Institute of Technology
Boston U

Also if there are some smaller Universities you could recommend for me on the eastern side of the US, that would be greatly appreciated.

Duke- Reach/Almost impossible- you have some chance, but its only accepted 14% this year, and your gpa/sats don’t measure up to their standards, and your ECs don’t set you apart

For miami u are you refering to the one in Florida or ohio. For florida-Its a match, your stats line up pretty well, and if your class rank is any good you will have a fair shot
If miami of ohio- Its a safety, your stats are higher than theirs

Gtown:reach, your stats are in the right ballpark, but gpa is a little lowish, but not too low, you have a shot, but do something to set yourself apart

GWU: Match: Your gpa is alright here, sat scores are good, assuming you took hard classes I can’t see why not, inless you don’t right very good essays. You could stand to improve GPA, ECs, leadership a little

Rochester: low match/safety- your sat scores put you there, your class rank should be there as well, show interest, and i would say you are in

RIT: safety - youll get in here- high acceptance rate- lower sat standards than yours.

Ill help you with other schools, but I would have to know your intended major or general interest in college, as well as which areas you would want to go, but Il give you suggestions if you give me a little more info

I want to major in Engineering, minor in business. Any thoughts on Boston U an Michigan?

I’m also looking at engineering, with a minor in business, and looking at GWU (as a safety, but I really love it).
Of your list I would say that Duke, Georgetown, and Michigan are the best engneering schools on your list
RITand rochester both have good engineering schools but are a bit more tech schoolish if thats what you want
GWU has a solid engineering program, as good as the two mentioned above, a great internship program, and is an up and coming department at gwu. They are trying to expand it, so they give merit scholarships to 50% of the engineering majors, if that impacts your decision.
BU and Miami U (Can you confirm which miami you are talking about) both have decent departments.

I would say Umich is a very reachable reach, and is very stats based, so get up your sat and maintain grades.

BU is just about a safety for you.

I would recommend looking at tufts, as a reach, or rice in houston, as they both are very similar to duke.
I would also look at Carnegie mellon or case western reserve, if you like tech school. Same goes for WPI and RPI.
Georgia tech is very well known for engineering as well, if you want a state school.
Lehigh, laffayette and bucknell are all great engineering programs if you want a smaller school and don’t mind pennsylvania.
Union is also very strong
Vanderbilt and tulane may be more of a reach, but they are similar to duke, if less selective.
I’m sure im missing a few other programs you should look at

Sorry that list was so poorly organized, I was just listing them off the top of my head.

If you have time chance me back
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/889642-chance-me-rice-duke-jhu-ect-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

I am talking about the Miami Univ. in Florida. Thank your help. You seem really interested in GWU. Do you reside near that university

I live in CT, but visited GWU when I visited Johns Hopkins, and I enjoyed GWU better, cause it looked like the kids were actually having fun, while the JHU kids just looked stressed, the main hook of GWU for me is their scholarships, cause they give out so many, and I would probably need one to go there. Its not my top choice overall, but it is my favorite safety, and maybe my third favorite besides rice and tufts

Personally I didn’t want a tech school, but looked at almost all the schools that you are looking at. They are all great and you can’t really go wrong at any of them. Just find the ones that fit best for you

I live in FL, and have visited GWU, Miami, and Boston U. Does my ethnicity or SAT 2 scores count towards anything.

MATH 1: 700
MATH 2: 670
(i know bad)

Im Indian

SAT2s probably won’t help with those scores, but wont hurt. If you don’t have to submit them, it might be a good idea not to. Ethnicity will probably help depending on the school, and how in need of diversity they are

engineering on east coast- look at bucknell, lehigh, and lafayette

Can Anyone esle chance me?

Miami Univ. - Match
Michigan - Match/Low Reach
Duke - Reach
Georgetown - Low Reach
George Washington Univ. - Safety/Low Match
Rochester - Match
Rochester Institute of Technology - Safety
Boston U - Safety/Low Match

On a personal note, I visited BU this week and absolutely loved it! It’s probably my favorite safety so far.

Its funny you say Georgetown is lowreach. I actually think its a high reach

I’d say Gtown and Duke are close for highest reach, but dukes got a slightly higher gpa, a slightly lower acceptance rate, and (if they beat butler monday) will have even more applicants, because they will be the NCAA champions in basketball. Seriously, their sports program does bring in a lot of kids. I would say both are reaches, but Gtown may be a tad easier

Miami Univ. - Match
Michigan - Match/Low Reach
Duke - Reach
Georgetown - Reach
George Washington Univ. - Low Match
Rochester - Match
Rochester Institute of Technology - Safety
Boston U - Match

I would try to get your SATs up if at all possible. Right now, they look like the things you could change the easiest for the most benefit.

[Chance me?](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/896970-chance-junior-upper-level-universities-ivies-wash-u-tufts.html#post1064499509)

Interesting. Can I have a third person chance me please?

Bad GPA, test scores, and extracurricular. Duke and Georgetown are impossible. Look for a state school.

I guess I figured that out. Thanks for being blunt
