My changes for University of Washington, please?

Unweighted GPA: 3.01
ACT score: 24 composite
Out-of-state student
Had adversity (obstacles in high school that affected GPA, mentioned in essay)

Bottomline: What are my chances? Can I increase them, still?

Insufficient Information. Location? EC's? Grade trends?

Get that ACT score up!

UW seems to accept more students from Washington than anywhere else, so I'd say just by being out of state you're chances aren't as good. but you never know.

I think it would really depend on your essay and how you explained the situation. Looking at your grades and score alone tells me that your chances are okay for an in-state, but I think as an out-of-state student you don't have much of a chance. Again, it would depend on the essay, since I know nothing about your situation.

most public schools accept more in-states because if they want to keep up their funding from the state, they better be accepting the people that have been paying them (in the form of tax). If not, these public schools can see their funding drop.

And seeing that, I don't think it will help your chances. Furthermore, the main killer is the GPA. The average GPA is around 3.74-3.76.

i would really try to work on your ACT- i go to a private school in seattle, have both my parents as prorfs at UW, a 3.5 with honors classes and an 1850 and i doubt i'll get in.

Do you really think that you won't get in?

I think I probably have about a 45% chance of getting in, last year most kids at my school who were accepted had a 3.8+ and 1900+ / 29+. Most of these kids at my school this year have already gotten in. However, I am still crossing my fingers because of my SAT scores and especially my SAT Essay; which UW seems to put a lot of weight on as they have correlated first semester college success (@ UW) with high scores in this category. UW also is seeing a HUGE jump in apps as it is a great school and definitely a public ivy constantly gaining more notoriety.

i think u're almost guaranteed admission ^, last yr i had a friend who got like 1580 SAT(3 sections, hands down),like 3.9 gpa, not sure about essay, perhaps crappy, but his courses+gpa are solid, and he's even OOS...

^ You also have to realize that for every 1600, there is also a person with a 1950 who doesn't get in. And I also notice that the friend had a really high GPA (i.e., potential to do well). Likewise, for every person with a 3.6 GPA that gets in, there is a person with a 3.9 GPA who doesn't get in (or else the average wouldn't be 3.75). You can't make the case that one person=all. The general case has to be taken.

I apologize for bringing up a few week old post. Was searching "Average graduating GPA for UW" and this showed. I go to the UWT school as a Computer Science Student. UW doesn't just look at GPA but also extra curricular activities. A 3.01 is pretty low but not horrible, I did not get in with my 3.21 but had no extra curricular activities. I know people who had a 2.9 but did two sports that got in, as well as some with 3.0 that where part of student body and a single sport that got in. The university of Washington does also accept more in-state students then out for two reasons, one was already stated and the other is the amount of in-state that actually apply. Note that these years it is much harder as 2 years ago was the first time UW actually needed people to not accept as they gave to many acceptance (like all schools). I suggest you note if you have any of extra curricular activities as they will really help, and if you do not need financial aid that is even more of a plus.

A girl from my high school (near Atlanta) got her acceptance letter. She had a high GPA but did not take ANY AP or honors courses--basically a high GPA based on general courses--which I could not believe. Nice girl but basically not involved in school--however, is good at foreign language--must have had a great essay or something! I just don't get it.
