My classes for fall 2011 (incoming freshmen)

Can i have your opinion on my fall 2011 schedule?

bus-x 100
CSCI-A 110
HISP-S 100 (you only need 2 years of spanish in college?)
MATH-M 119

oh i’m trying to get into kelley, so are these classes suitable to getting in?

Looks like an easy schedule. Also, if you get into Kelley you do not need any foreign language, so keep that in mind.

wait for gen ed it says i need like a foreign language or take 2 culture courses. Wouldn’t taking a language be easier than taking 2 courses. I’m already familiar with Spanish with 3 years of it in high school. At least is something. What do u guys recommend?

If you’ve already taken Spanish I’d just go on ahead and finish it off at IU, especially if you’re good at it. You’ll 99.9% place higher than S100 if you have 3 years experience with it, and there’s a chance that you might test out of the foreign language requirement completely.

that’s not what I’m shooting for. My going for to acceptance of kelley, which isn’t based on rigor but more of meeting those classes needed and just getting a B or higher. It’s similar to math, I’ve taken calculus but there’s no point of taking finite math. If i’ve taken spanish why not take a more simple one just to get that B or higher that is needed.

how do you know your classes already?

Well this schedule is tentative, I’m just doing what I can to know at least what road I’m going down. I’m just asking people would this be a good schedule to have in terms of having classes that would benefit me and help me get into Kelley.

Your orientation advisor is going to be on your ass to take the higher level class if you are eligible to do so… you have been warned.

EDIT: I had a feeling that 100 levels wouldn’t be eligible for the ID requirement, thank you to bthomp to clearing that up.

One-hundred level Spanish classes will not help you at all in fulfilling Kelley’s international dimension requirement. You need six credits at the two hundred level.

But you are right, that the one-hundred level Spanish classes should be easy B’s if you already have three years of Spanish. Just know that the one-hundred level classes will not help you at all for the international dimension (the six credits must be at the 200-level or above, if you use a foreign language to meet the requirement), and that even six credits of the two-hundred level foreign language classes, though they they will fulfill the international dimension, they will not help at all for the distribution option 27-credit hour core.

There are lots of classes in the College of Arts and Sciences, however, that “double-count” for the international dimension requirement AND Kelley’s distribution option requirements at the same time. So, if you took these types of classes instead of foreign language classes, you could meet graduation requirements more efficiently, enabling you to take fewer credits or to squeeze better electives into your schedule.

But you are on the right track to do the minimum to get into Kelley. If you are coming to IU for Kelley alone, then make sure that you get accepted to Kelley. You can concentrate on taking more demanding and rewarding classes after you get accepted. Your schedule for Fall looks very doable for solid B’s, especially if you can do well in calculus. Remember that you need 26 credits by the end of your freshman year to apply, and that your Spring semester must include ENG W131, BUS A100, and BUS K201. You should probably add BUS X104 to the spring schedule, in order to get another Icore prerequisite out of the way. At least 80% of the students get a B or higher in X104.

The advisors can recommend that you take certain classes, but you do not have to take them based on their advice. Also, you can change your schedule without their approval after you register. You are the only person responsible for the schedule you choose.

Should I just take 2 culture’s course to fulfill the language thing or just take the language. My biggest priority right now for college is just get into kelley

Taking the two culture classes would be riskier, I think. Also, I don’t know what those culture classes would be. Kelley advisors keep a list each semester of the classes that double count, but I don’t know which classes these are, and they can change from semester to semester.

One disadvantage to taking the two culture classes is that they would be three credits each; whereas your two freshmen Spanish classes would be four credits each semester, which would get your closer to the 26 credits needed to apply to Kelley.

You can make up for distribution option classes that you do not take at IU in fall and spring semesters by taking classes in summers that transfer from community colleges to IU. You can use the Credit Transfer Service and the list of distribution option classes to see which ones will transfer.

should i add ENG 131 or save it for next semester and this schedule would be good for 1st semester.

…that’s only 12 credits, and you want to get into Kelley? You’re going to need another class. W131 or K201 are your options basically.

If you are looking for the easiest schedule to get into Kelley, it would be easier to get all solid B’s if you took the minimum number of classes to do it and do it with the easiest possible schedule. So,

Fall
bus-x 100 (3 cr.)
CSCI-A 110 (3 cr.)
HISP-S 100 (4 cr.)
MATH-M 119 (3 cr.)

Spring
bus A100 (1 cr.)
HISP S105 (4 cr.)
ENG W131 (3 cr.)
BUS K201 (3 cr.)
BUS X104 (3 cr.)

This would give you 27 credits. You only need 26 credits to apply to Kelley.

Get all solid B’s and higher, and you are guaranteed to be admitted to Kelley. Just make sure you get all solid B’s and higher. It is not as easy as it may look, as you can see from all the threads here about getting into Kelley. Whatever you do, don’t take finite and calculus both, and do not take any calculus class except M119. Do take CSCI A110 the semester before taking K201.

dam. i forgot. i’m going to save 201 next semester because i’m taking computer science now. i’m going to go with eng

why bus A100 and 104? shouldn’t i take like courses that will help fulfill my gen ed too? i was thinking sociology. Also, when should i start taking high 200 courses to fulfill that thing bthomp said that you need like high 200 courses.

So you will be taking 16 credits in the Fall? By adding W131?

bus-x 100
CSCI-A 110
HISP-S 100
MATH-M 119
ENG - 131

good fall schedule?

The two hundred level foreign language classes to fulfill the international dimension is what I was talking about. You don’t really need to take them until after you get into Kelley. You don’t need to take them at all if you fulfill the international dimension with distribution option classes that double count. These can be one-hundred level courses. I am simply showing you the very easiest way to get all B’s and get into Kelley, based on the knowledge of Spanish that you already have. Remember that making your schedule more difficult makes getting guaranteed admission more difficult, too.
