My College Essay

Ok, here is the deal I have had pretty bad grades since my freshman year(Like C's, D's and F's). My counselor told me that i should write a essay explaining my bad grades and how i have the potential to do better(because I Do). Someone told me that its a bad idea to write about your grades because it makes it sound like a excuse to why you have bad grades. Can someone either help me pick a better topic or give me ideas about what to say in this essay?
Any help is welcome

If you have a good enough reason why you got those grades...then yes go ahead and explain in your essay. By a good reason I mean something like: your father passed away that year, you moved to a different much more rigourous school in the middle of the year, you were under clinical depression, etc. If you don't have a serious reason like that...for example your reason is "i slacked" then no, don't write about it. Just be honest though....did you have a real reason for getting those grades, or no?

No I just slacked. I can get good grades, I mean i am graduating. But my GPA is below what Colorado State would like. I have bad grades but good test scores My counselor told me that if i write a good enough essay i might be accepted as a probationary freshman or something like that.

Then you shouldn't write about that in your essay. I mean honestly, slacking off just isn't that good of an excuse.

In any case, if they see an upward trend in your grades, that will speak for itself.

Well my grades last semester were bad..mostly D's but so far all i have is A's and B's..If I keep those grades along with a good essay will that make a difference?

are you a JR? um...well....if you have a truely amazing turn around, say your freshman year was bad, but you saw the errors of your ways and from then on you got a and bs, that might work, but if you are STILL (as of a few months ago) getting Ds, well, that won't fly

is it really slacking off? are there other possiblities

If you had D's last semester, then that will tell admins that you slacked off again. Even though you started doing better with A's and B's, the "mostly D's" last semester will hurt you.

I'm a Senior. I don't know if it really is slacking off or not. My dad injured himself a while back and hasn't really worked since then and my grandma died when i was a Sophomore. Since she died i have had worse grades than before.

You say that since your grandma has died you have had the worst grades than before...well you never mentioned this when i asked if there was a serious reason.

If you honestly believe this was why you had bad grades, then explain it. Not going to say if they will cut you some slack...but they might consider it.

well, a grandma dying, unless she was your primary caregiver and you were all alone, sorry to be callous, but grandma's die....and if you are a senior, isn';t it a bit late for essays?

you may have had a rough time, but that can only count for so much, its having the rough time and having a bit of a slump, but pulling yourself out of it

I will try, If it doesn't work out i might just go to a Community College then transfer after 2 years. I will Keep you all updated

I do wish you luck, you seem to really want it now and its not to late to get a good college education

Community Colleges are great schools and they are for people who slippped and slid in HS...work hard, study, don't slide and you can find yourself in a great school...

You are very honest here and that shows something about your character and being honest with yourself about what choices you made, well, that will help you not make the mistakes again....

Don't dispair, your path may just have an extra turn or two until you get to your ultimate goals

Again, good luck and just keep working hard. yo never know

Ya many people have told me that i have great character and that will help me in the long run. Im still going to try to get into CSU and hope for the best.
oh yeah 1 more question. Can i transfer after 1 yr at a CC or do i have to wait 2

I think after a year, some do two years at a CC to get the two year degree...so i would work hard to keep as many options open as possible

if you do end up at a CC, and that is just fine, do lots of research and make sure you take the right classes....and check out the CSUs you want to transfer into now, so that you are fully prepared if that is where your path takes you

as well, really get to know the staff at the whichever college you attend, so that you have lots of support

if the CC knows your goals, they will stear you in the right direction

is
