My college list and suggestions?

I’m a sophomore in high school. I have a 3.198 GPA and top 30% rank, as of last year. I do not know my current GPA or rank for this semester, but it will be higher. My GPA has gone up a lot since freshman year. I am trying to do better and I got 2 72’s freshman year in honors math which hurt my GPA down. I am now in CP math and got an 88%. Here are my grades thus far:

Freshman Year- (I averaged both semesters)
AP Human Geo: 81%, 91% with 10 points
Accelerated Integrated Algebra I: 72%
Honors Biology: 85%
Honors Language Arts: 84%
Gym: 96% and Health: 95%
Theater: 95.5%

Sophomore year:
AP World History: 80%, 90% with the 10 points
Integrated Geometry: 88%
Honors Chemistry: 90%
Honors Language Arts: 93%
Advanced Drama: 95%
French I: 81%

I am on the varsity swim team and it is my second season on the team. I am going to do varsity dive team next season and I am taking more acting classes and I have two talent agents. I love to act, but recently have decided against majoring in drama. I am interested in applying to Chapman for theater, but because of their Screen Acting major. I would like to major in screenwriting or print journalism in college. I also have an interest in becoming a talent agent. I love Social Studies and Language Arts and I dislike Math and Science. My grades usually depend on the teacher, I had a great LA teacher and Chem. teacher this year. I have about 10-15 hours of community service unfortunately.

What I am looking for in a college:

1) I would like the school to have great financial aid. I want little loans as possible. I have two brothers and one new born sister. My older brother is a junior…
2) I like the school to have more girls then guys. This would be good relationship wise, lol!
3) Urban or suburban. I would like to be in the LA or NYC or Northeast area most likely. I do not want to live in the country or a rural area.
4) Small teacher student ratio
5) Good study abroad program
6) I do not want a sports school such as UGA or UF. I DO NOT want to have classes with over a 100 people, no thanks! I also do not want a school which is all about sororities and fraternities
7) Not too small, but not too big.
8) I like the school to be liberal/moderate. I do not want it to be too liberal or too conservative. I do not like schools which socially just involve alcohol and drugs.
9) I want the school to have people from various regions, just not New York or California. I am raised Catholic and I am Italian, but I am also half Jewish.
10) I want the school to be test optional or care less about test scores. I usually do average on standardized tests. I got a 3 on the AP exam. I plan to take the ACT/SAT next year, I do not know my PSAT scores yet.
11) Laid back
12) To act in plays without majoring in drama or the ability to go to the city and take acting classes

My college list: NYU, USC, Northwestern, Flagler College, New College of Florida, Georgia College and State University (instate), Indiana University, Reed College, Kenyon College, Wesleyan, Chapman, George Washington, Villanova, Loyola Marymount and Sarah Lawrence.

My proposed junior and senior year schedule:

Junior:
Honors Language Arts
AP US History
Pre Cal
Journalism/Newspaper
Honors Physics
French II

Senior:
AP Language and Composition
AP Psychology
AP Macro and AP Government (per semester)
AP Euro History
Journalism/Yearbook or Newspaper
French III

I plan to take Environmental Science or Astronomy online and take Stats or Calculus at the CC my senior year. I know my current list does not meat all my criteria and no school is going to. But I am willing to compromise! What do you think of my current college list and what schools do you suggest I should look at and is there any schools on my list which you may think would be a terrible fit? Indiana may not meet a lot of my criteria, but it has an amazing journalism program and I think I can get some scholarship money. I am instate in Georgia, but I have grown up in South Florida suburbs and Georgia suburbs. I wouldn’t mind moving back to Florida either. I really do not like Georgia, but I am willing to go somewhere instate if it means to be debt free or as a last resort. I love Georgia weather, but not the atmosphere. I still have time to bring up my grades, my goal is a 3.5-3.7. I am no longer interested going to go to college early, hence my screen name. I know it may sound early, but I just want some perspective. Thanks!

You’re too young to really have a true “college list” down. Although I think it’s great that you’re looking at colleges already, we on CC can’t really say whether you’re a “match” or would fit in anywhere yet. Set your goals on having the stats to get into the best college that you’d like, but if you don’t make those goals no worries. After junior year shakes up, you’ll have a better feel for where you might fit in, but you won’t really know until senior year what the best places to apply are, because a lot can change, especially for a teenager, in a year.

My schools counselors suggest sophomores put together a list and research schools. I just want some feedback and what schools would fit. I know I can change a lot, but seniors I know have wanted to go to X school since freshman year. I know in two years, I still won’t be open to a huge football school. I have researched schools since 8th grade and I have learned a lot. I almost applied to Simon’s Rock, but decided it was not right for me.

You better raise your GPA for some of those schools you want to apply to. Instead of focusing on making a college list even though school counselors are suggesting it. You should focus on your academics. As of right now with your GPA, I doubt you’d get into USC, NYU, Northwestern, IU, GWU, and Nova. I don’t know the LAC’s you posted up there so yeah.

I’ll have a 3.3 after this semester. I got all A’s and two B’s, I don’t think it’s that bad. If I keep it up, I’ll have a 3.5-3.6 GPA and that’s the average for NYU. Also, screenwriting is about 50% about your profile. If you compare my grades from last year, I have done 100% better.

Look at this-

Honors Language Arts: 84% (freshman year), 93% (sophomore year)
Honors Bio: 85% (freshman), Honors Chem: 90%
Math: 72% (honors though), 88%

Research the types of schools you want, large/small, rural/urban, etc. but don’t get caught up on a specific list of schools right now. Work on bringing your GPA up.

I already know what kind of schools I want, not trying to be rude… I’m trying to figure out what schools fit. I study about two hours each night and I may not have straight A’s, but I try my best. Thanks for your help!

Well it’s too early to know what schools fit as of right now since it’s two years later. Standards change every year, I know your sick of reading this but know to raise your GPA and do well on your SAT’s. You have to take SAT II’s also if I recall for schools like NYU, so start preparing for those right now. If your taking any AP’s next year like US History then take a SAT II in US History next year after the AP exam. If you have time, consider touring some of the schools ahead of time so you know if you “fit” in even though somethings may change. Talking with a few professors regarding the program would be a plus and ask if anything will happen in the future if they are aware of anything. So to sum it up: concentrate on GPA, SAT, SAT II’s, and consider visiting a few schools. Best of luck.

Oh yeah, if money does matter and NYU is on the top of your list consider looking at scholarships. The financial aid over there is horrendous and the cost of attendance will def. be going up every year.

I know NYU has horrendous financial aid, that’s why I was asking people what schools they suggest which have good financial aid. Thanks for the help!

BU matches most of your criteria except it is probably about as good with financial aid as NYU. It’s 60% female lol.

Zin- I want to take Stats and Calulus at a CC. I am not going to apply to schools based on cost, however I want some schools that have good aid packages.

Schrizto- Thanks! I have looked at BU, but not in much research. It seems I always like the most expensive schools…

Look at Drew and Muhlenberg

Thanks! Never heard of Drew, but Muhlenberg was on my list but I don’t want to major in drama. That was a main reason I liked the school. Will check Drew out!

Take a look at American University, too. It’s supposed to have a good journalism program and you’re planning on applying to GWU. American is also in DC and it is easier to get into than GW. Also it has a lopsided 40/60 male/female ratio. It gives out scholarships too and it’s not extremely difficult to get one either unlike NYU or BU.

Thanks! I have looked into AU and it seems fine. I am planning on visiting schools this summer. I know students won’t be around, and read some people think it is worthless. Do you guys think it would be a good idea? Right now, it seems lots of schools sound similar and only some programs stand out. I think by visiting schools it will help me cross some schools out.
